Yes. It's synth-pop, and these days that almost always means autotune.

                • TIL Ellington composed Solitude from scratch, leaning against the wall at the RCA studio, because he was one song short, in 20 minutes. Nobody should apply the word "genius" to any other 20th century composer except Stravinsky on a very good day.

Video Games is a beautiful song about backwoods, ignorant, abusive love. I heard it before I learned about her whole gross story.

I'll say this about Roan after hearing about her for the first time last Wednesday so of course my opinion is considered and vitally important. I watched an unexpurgated clip of her statement about why she won't endorse, and I'm sympathetic and also fairly impressed than she has a coherent and nuanced take on "Dump is a Nazi but Dems are helping murder Gaza babies." The bottom line is on all the facts she is absolutely right. What else you get is a very young person (she is 26, I would have guessed 18) struggling with what anyone with a conscience struggles with: when you commit to anyone with political power in a superpower that means you are underwriting murder at a level that in most decades achieves genocidal proportions. Power is a fist smashing the faces of innocents and probably always will be until we get FTL and leave the reptiles behind.

I would say to her the only two courses of action are either committing to a side and accepting the blood on your soul or opting out and not opposing the Nazis. That lets me choose the Dems. I still don't sleep comfortably. I know exactly what I am doing. But in our timeline and at this moment it is the best of only two possible actions. By all means, also work to bring about a better world where we don't have to be on the same side as Dick F-cking Cheney, but for now, there is a clear choice so put your whole self into it. That is a mature recognition that your pure virginal conscience doesn't matter when more pain and lives of others is in the balance.

But she's so d-mn young. I applaud that it gives her nightmares. It should for all of us. And I haven't heard any critic of hers say anything remotely as kind and genuine as she has.

Her music is egregious, but I believe she is trying to do right as a human, and what else can one do?

Any if people want to criticize her, well, without makeup I'll go to the wall for her.

                        • Howdy! Not sure when I last posted in a USCHO Music thread, but the most talented artist that I started listening to in 2024 is IU. Why did it take me 15+ years? Old age is like that. What's she like? MV:

                            • So, Beat Tour at the Warner Theater in DC last night.

Levin is 78 and still amazing. Belew is 71 or 72 and still a maestro. This is the first time I had seen Vai in concert. When he stays controlled ("discipline") he is magnificent. When he went off on flourishes he just was outside my comfort for Fripp music.

I had never even heard of Danny Carey. He's a great drummer. He set out to out-Bruford Bruford and succeeded. Sublimated himself entirely to the material.

The encores included "Red," and having all three guys up stage playing a full-on hard rock version was a blast. I really thought the first half of the show was weak, with muddy sound mixing and meh song selection. The second half was brilliant. The tour is worth it.

Warner is now run by 9:30. Remodeled 1920s silent movie house. Lovely venue:

I saw Vai in concert last summer at a small theater in Bar Harbor. While he is obviously talented it wasn't for me and my wife hated it I would like to see him with a band that he was a part of and not the whole show.
