It happens mostly at soccer games because that’s really the only sporting event that draws crowds around the world. There are other sports that can draw big crowds in some places sure, India and cricket for example, but soccer’s popularity absolutely dwarfs any other sport.

Interestly, the most non-soccer related crowd crushes have happened during the Hajj in Mecca.
Well, to be fair, I've also been to a very full Wembley to see a NZ-Wales rugby match. And two F1 races in Europe. Which had a lot more people than any football match that happens on the continent. One of them even had Ferrari win on home soil- the celebration was wild, but very peaceful.

But, still, popularity should not be a measure of how bad the fans behave.

      Oh I agree. I think it's ridiculous.

One of the major problems at the club level is that, in a lot of places, the "ultras" will have effective control of the club and that allows to do the stupid things that they do (flares, fireworks, smoke bombs, racist chanting etc.) pretty much unchecked. It's the double edged sword of having fan control.

I saw some of the pre-game show where they mentioned the articles demanding he get fired the week prior, and then the apologies for making the final. I'm sure he was the first to demand him get fired for losing that game.

            • Reports are that 14 year old Cavan Sullivan will be in the lineup tonight for the Philadelphia Union. Likely not starting but if he makes an appearance he will break Freddy Adu's record as youngest ever player in MLS.

Can't say that I'm a fan of the MLS copying that part of football from the rest of the world. Seems like the rest of the professional leagues do just fine with waiting for them to be 18 for the NHL, 19 for the NBA, +3 from HS for the NFL, HS graduation or 21 for MLB.

It’s completely different for soccer. The European champions were lead by a kid who turned 17 during the tournament.

Heck, Cavan Sullivan is already playing professionally. He’s scored in back to back games for Philly’s second team.

Given how Adu's career played out, not sure if I would agree to that. Sure, there's the rare player like Kobe or Lebron. But there's still a lot of growing in a kid before they get old enough. And seeing how my niece's possible hockey career was cut nicely short during some real physical play in HS soccer....

Didn't realize that soccer is such a children's game, though. Thought it would take some real physical development and work to be a long term star. Especially when you see that mid-distance runners (a reasonably close substitute) don't peak until well into their 20's. And many of them move onto the longer distances as they age.

But it's not my game to worry about.

                      • Some post-tourney drama.

France has made an official complaint to FIFA regarding a racist chant caught on video during Argentina’s celebration.

Gibraltar has made an official complaint to FIFA over a chant Spain made during their celebration saying Gibraltar is Spanish.

Nearly ever notable player started playing professionally in their teenage years. It is very very rare for a player to start their professional career at 20 or older and succeed.

Beckham was 17 (though had been playing in academy and reserve matches prior to that).

Messi was 17 (though had played reserve matches as early as 15).

Cristiano Ronaldo was 16 (in Champions League match!)

And there are a ton of teenagers playing regularly already in MLS, including plenty under 18. Seattle’s Obed Vargas is a regular starter, in his third season and is only 18.

Moved to Europe, crashed out because he never really developed a good work ethic and just kind of expected everything to be handed to him. Also, he never really grew and remained undersized and understrengthed for his career. He had a brief comeback in 2011 playing in the Gold Cup and briefly in Philly but never really did much. Bounced around in the lower leagues and retired.

                              • TBF, the system in place now for Sullivan is radically different than when Adu started. Adu basically got signed and thrown into the deep end without any lower levels to come up through. Sullivan is coming out of Philly's youth academy teams and their second team. And he's only likely to make his debut because Philly is dealing with so many injuries and international callups.
