I just saw a TikTok that said he admitted on MtP that he is the hub that all spokes radiate out from. He's the conductor to the orchestra.

He admitted he's the one who reached out to get the votes flipped and to interfere.

No offense to whatever TikTock you saw...but Scooby is hardly the only one destroying her for the interview. Everything I have read was this was a worse disaster than the CNN townhall. (In part because it was a Network) Outside of what you posted there was zero pushback or fact checking...instead all of it done on the web site after the fact. It doesn't help that when she promoted the interview leasing up to it is sounded like she was closer to Jimmy Fallon than a legit journalist.

This. The entire interview was a sham and a huge puff piece for his campaign. The media is only interested in money, not journalism. Journalism is basically all but dead in this country.

Allegedly, it wasn't always like this. In the introduction to her 2022 book When the News Broke -- Chicago 1968 and the Polarizing of America, Heather Hendershot includes this 1970 quote from then CBS News President Dick Salant in a memo to the news staff:

Fun's fun, and I am sure everybody is just delighted with the current ratings of the (CBS) Evening News compared to the NBC Nightly News. And I know it's mighty tempting to pump it out, loudly or quietly to the press. But once we start the rating game there is no end to it, and particularly for journalism it's not a healthy game. Therefore I want to make sure that nobody in this shop and I mean nobody, directly or indirectly, over the table or under the table, feeds our ratings to any part of the press

In 2023 every single electronic news outlet points out how they are number 1 in some rating or another. It's a stretch for some, but still they point it out. I'm not here to say "back in my day" the major mainstream news providers were all without bias and interested only bringing the news in an accurate and fair fashion. But clearly the press knew it had an important mission and played a proper role in a functioning, successful democracy.

There are still good outlets for news, and everyone here knows and utilizes some of those. But sadly, the mainstream media, where a sizeable majority get their "news" is interested in one thing and one thing only: ratings. And providing accurate, fair coverage of current events is about the 1000th most important thing when it comes to ratings. Quite a few of today's media moguls and talking heads are sure to join the likes of trump burning in hell for an eternity when they're dead. That's hollow comfort now.

Prior to the cable networks, news in a handful of national newspapers (NYT, WaPO, London Times, CSM, WSJ, occasionally local yokels like the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, or Boston Globe) and on the big three television networks was a loss leader. Being responsible and truthful was a mark of quality. Thorough coverage was a mark of distinction that gave the outlet cachet. It was understood that the actual consumer base for challenging and honest news would never be enough to compensate for the cost, but media did it to cash the quality check and drive subscription and advertising to wealthier, status-conscious consumers. Growing up in NY there were NYT households and then there were Daily News and NY Post households. The advertisers in each were very different. On tv, the national media competed for status with gravitas.

Local newspapers and local tv were the same garbage you see today.

Cable was Eternal September for news. The floodgates opened and the boobs poured in, and the only way to feed them is with slabs of pork fat. CNN started the race to the bottom for quality, then Fox perfected the model of feeding people's delusions back to them for profit after swiping it off the evangelicals. Eventually, the MBAs demanded the quality media be at least revenue neutral, and that way always lies Top 40 and John Grisham. Demography is destiny.

So, here we are. The quality exists in little pockets on the internet. Nobody has been able to create a large scale quality replacement, but perhaps that isn't needed. You don't need a NYT with a desk in every country when you can watch the news from every country's highest quality media. The real problem now is language accessibility, and we have the good fortune to speak the language of the global Harkonnen empire, so we're in a better position than anybody else.

Or they all could follow MSNBC and at least stop lying about things, and actually point out when stating a fact vs. an opinion. I mean I seriously wish I could say the same about CNN and FOX but I cannot. And I watch enough MSNBC and fact check enough MSNBC to know.

Same thing on the Sunday Shows actually. Meet the Press does a good job of not crossing lines, their biggest problem is the Chuck Todd effect. ABC, and CBS are fine. FOX is just continually a cespool of disinformation and bull****.

In this country the real problem is lazy people. We want to be fed things in simplistic terms we don't have to think a lot about.

In 1972 that worked to a great extent because the mainstream media still took its mission seriously and even a lazy consumer got accurate news. And even though I grew up in a household that encouraged critical thinking skills and consumed news via multiple platforms (CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, multiple local newspapers, weekly print newsmagazines when something like Newsweek or US News and World Report were worth reading), the vast majority of our news consumption was from two outlets, Cronkite and his nightly news broadcast, and the South Bend Tribune. Even if we were lazy and made only that minimal effort, we were reasonably well-informed, and could participate in democracy honestly.

That's no longer the case with probably 75% of America in 2023. We're just lucky that we also have our share of Drew's, Sics, and even Chuckles and Whalers too. Half of my colleagues are ill-informed at best and don't realize that even though CNN SEEMS to be anti-trump, they are actually doing more to promote him than to reveal him. But they vote pretty much like I do and are on the same side as me (and I suspect most of you) on most of the more prominent social issues of the day.
