I know he’s not crying foul. But, coming from a fan of a school that has always been disadvantaged (plenty of it self inflicted TBF), I’m not exactly mustering up any sympathy for Minnesota.

And a yearly affirmation: F- all of the CCHA schools. May your conference be a one bid conference for all of eternity.

Not asking for sympathy and I said as much. The issue is far bigger than my favorite university.

Yes this is how I read it too, but I can't help but make a joke about the first world problems Minnesota has compared to literally all other non B10 teams in NCAA hockey. The amount of cash flowing around any B10 level program means if you aren't doing great then you're doing something funamentally wrong, see Spartans, Badgers. NoDak, ND, Denver, BU, BC are in "haves" group too.

If you wanted to read it in the worst possible way, it could look like entitled UMinn fan cries about entitled Boston team having the audacity to buy THEIR player away.
          Let's Go Broncos!

That's how I took it. "If it can happen to Minnesota, it's a bigger problem than I [you] thought"

if that's the case, I very much share your opinion.

To be fair (letterkenny.gif), there are only like 3-5 hockey programs that claim to make money. I'm guessing it's closer to a dozen without stupid accounting tricks.

Even so, I don't think the Spartans really in that tier A anymore. My $0.02.

Not at all - it was a knock on Minnesota for not being better positioned to navigate the NIL landscape. Remember NIL has absolutely nothing to do with how big a university is or is not. The school itself cannot fund NIL - it has to come from donors and UM has been notoriously bad at generating donations for all types of athletic projects. This goes back decades.

So again this has nothing to do with looking for sympathy - I am simply criticizing my university for not doing a better job of it and the U being a blue blood doesn't solve NIL. Yes Minnesota will in many cases still have many advantages otherwise - my commentary is specifically about NIL.

I think part of the issue is that NIL is still being figured out by many. Yea, SEC Football will just throw gobs of money at players with no expectation of return, but elsewhere, people are working on figuring out how to use NIL to actually market stuff. You'll see this trickle down eventually. Hockey, in many cases, is the "big fish in a small pond". Despite not having six-figure potential, key players can absolutely make a few bucks while playing.

I have been saying for 3 or 4 years now that if Notre Dame is ever gonna win an NCAA title in hockey, they better get around to doing it quickly while I still care.

Everything that has happened in college sports in the last 10 years has made me less interested in them. I used to be voracious in my consumption of college sports but now, meh. And I know the athletes have often been taken advantage of and victimized by the system, and not just now or 10 years ago, but forever, and that some of the changes would allegedly benefit the people who often give the most but get the least. It still doesn't alter the fact that these changes make the notion of college sports a lot less appealing to me.

At least the hypocrisy is dialed down a bit in professional sports, as there is no doubting the clear motive is for all parties involved to make the most money they can. And theoretically at least, the ones responsible for doing the most are compensated beyond the comprehension of 99.99% of us.

As a fan of a smaller school, I have no sympathy and zero panic to this situation.

The larger schools have long had institutional and structural advantages, donors, football money to build extravagant facilities, high end equipment contracts etc. So now suddenly one of these advantages is negatively affecting some of the larger schools and it’s a problem? I guess when you’re drowning you really don’t care about one of the people on the yacht having better food than the others.

If Minnesota can't throw NIL money at hockey, then, like, who the hell can?

There’s def whining happening here but it’s not gopher fans lol.

i find the whole concept fascinating and like I already said- every school will be on the losing side of it soon enough.

cue “omg you’ll still get recruits” before someone else has to huff and say it

The school doesn't control it in the traditional way it might otherwise. First donors have to pony up - in think they do have the option which program it goes to though. But again MN is bad for donations for athletics.

jj who is looking for sympathy?

One thing I’ve read is that the current MN setup is going to current players only, so nothing is being thrown around to woo prospective recruits. This may change, depending on whether or not a few rules surrounding all of this stuff are ever clearer than mud.

Also, this is Minnesota. We’ve gotta stand around with a couple brewskis dodging smoke from the campfire whining about the good old days for a few minutes before assimilating with the real world once again.
