I'd be very interested in seeing a roster comparison from that era to validate this claim, especially since the U traditionally with with mostly MN kids and players going to juniors was not as prevalent then. Also the other knock on UND was going with Canadians as much as anything.

Anyway has North Dakota gone back to the portal yet?

I just woke up to see that. That will break your mental fortitude down in a jiffy if it keeps happening.

I did a comparison back maybe 15-20 years ago (back in the day of multiple threads needed for a Gophers-Sioux series), and age wise (I didn't look at nationality, as that is just a stupid argument) it wasn't all that different than it is even today. The bigger schools tended to be slightly younger overall than the smaller schools. But everyone had the occasional 22-year old sophomore (typically, turning 22 at the end of the college hockey season). It wasn't just the smaller schools.

Also, FWIW, the Gophers bigger beef on this issue (at least historically) was with Denver. The Gopher-faithful just blindly (and hypocritically) applied the same argument to North Dakota when UND regained the edge in the rivalry in the early-80s.

            • North Dakota defeats Minnesota, 2-1, to get the split.

Script flipped from last night. Hawks outclassed the Gophers, but stellar goaltending kept it "close." Could have easily been 8-1 with the number of chances UND had. Oh well.

              On to Minnesota State.

                • Like I said I'd love to see the actual rosters to validate the age difference wasn't that glaring, and the "nationality" thing was more fun fan rivalry smack talk than anything serious.

If the information was readily available ~15 years ago, I'm sure it is still readily available (if not more so) today. Have a blast! Although, you'll probably be disappointed. ; )

                    Two quick examples:

                    1986-1987

North Dakota average age: 20 years 4 months
Minnesota average age: 19 years 10 months

                    1978-1979

North Dakota average age: 20 years 0 months
Minnesota average age: 19 years 9 months
                    North Dakota
                    National Champions: 1959, 1963, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1997, 2000, 2016

                    • From HockeyDB in 86-87 there were 14 players on Minnesota that were 18 and 19 as well as 4 that were 22 or older, for ND it was 8 and 6 respectively. I didn't care to dig any deeper and anyway those days are over.

UND played the better game on Saturday, and the Gophers didn't really wake up until the 3rd and didn't give themselves enough of a chance to tie the game.

Which probably accounts for why North Dakota's average age was about 6 months older than Minnesota that season. As I said originally, the difference then isn't all that different than the difference now (North Dakota is about 5 months older than Minnesota this season). The bigger schools tended to be slightly younger than the smaller schools.

Yeah, it was really just a complete 180 from Friday when Minnesota outplayed North Dakota, but goaltending kept it tight. A split was probably the "correct" result in relation to how the teams played over the entirety of the weekend.

Anyway, good luck to the Gophers the rest of the way, unless we happen to meet again in March/April. : )

                        • That was a good weekend. A split on the road against a top 5 team while missing the two captains (one of whom is your best dman).

the fact that the refs, twice, couldn’t identify which player committed a supposed infraction was hilarious

now side eying the wisco games this week. Thursday and Friday with 8pm starts
