And consider the conspiracy claim that big pharma is profiting huge. When you look at the industry that is paying for it, that claim falls apart fast- because the healthcare companies are now paying for those who have it. Based on historical reactions of that industry, it’s one of the greediest segments in the country. So they are not going to hand over profits to Pfizer and Moderna. Since they are so willing to do that, they see that paying for the vaccine is cheaper than paying for treatment. Basically, their willingness to pay for the vaccine is more data that shows the effectiveness of it.

Lean on the CDC all you want, antivaxxors. Your dream of profitable companies says they are more right than you claim.

Go back to your padded rooms, and bounce around with your hysteria. Your conspiracy says more about you than not.
Holy shiiiit! Did you let them jab your last batch of boosters into your head or something?

          • FYI, allegedly a lot of the CVS appointments being offered aren't actually for the new booster. Call and ask if you made one already, otherwise just wait a month until it's sure (and better timing for you anyway).

            • I could have sworn they pulled authorization for the old the moment they authorized the new booster last go around.

which isn't to say you're wrong. Just trying to remember details.

                • To be fair, the people I follow here and there for vaccine info aren't convinced the new version is particularly necessary for otherwise healthy people who are up to date (meaning mainline two plus 1-2 boosters). There's no reason not to, and lots of reasons to do it, but short of situations like DGFs or if you're traveling or whatnot, healthy people don't get gigantic benefits from it.

That said, I'll get it. I have a handful of shows this fall, may as well get some additional prophylactic help.

Just like you said, there's no reason not to. It might even save someone else's life.

Actually, I'm curious about the math there. If you get sick, how many people will you "chain-infect" with like three or four generations? What about ten? What are the odds someone in that ten-generation tree dies from it?

anyways, no reason not to. Might save you a week of misery or reduce a week of misery to a a couple days.

R0 is the measure of infectiousness in a population with zero assumed immunity. In other words, it's the fielding independent pitching version. Re is the measure of how it is "effectively" at a given time, due to things like levels of population immunity or population density, etc. It's the "regular" ERA version. Since Re changes constantly and is extremely hard to actually measure, as a non-clinical person, I find R0 easier to use since it tells the story about the virus itself. In either case, the number is basically how many people you'll spread it to. If it's greater than 1, the virus will spread. If it's less than 1, it wont.

                      A decent primer: https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/when-w...ers-r0-and-re/

Anyway, I can't find good sub-variant details so this is based on older info. I've seen R0 for Omicron range from 5-8. There was some stories going around last year that the BA.5 sub-variant had some ridiculous >18 R0, but that was a misreading of findings. I've seen people reference XBB and some of the newest fun sub-variants hovering around 12 but I have no earthly idea how accurate those are.

For perspective, here's some fun viruses we all know and love:
                      • Measles – 12-18
                      • Chickenpox – 10-12
                      • Polio – 10-12
                      • HIV/AIDS – 2-5
                      • SARS – 0.19-1.08
                      • MERS – 0.3-0.8
                      • Common Cold – 2-3
                      • Ebola – 1.56-1.9
                      • Seasonal Influenza – 0.9-2.1
                      • 1918 Influenza Pandemic – 1.4-2.8
                      • 2009 Influenza Pandemic – 1.4.1.6

So even at the low projections of Omicron, it's in some pretty rarified company.

                      • Well, I got the 'rona again. Started not feeling well yesterday, and test just now confirmed it.

Started out exactly the same way as the last time. Was coughing a lot yesterday, felt like I was coming down with a cold. As I usually get sick at the change of the seasons, fall and spring, I didn't think much of it. But figured I better test anyway.

As I said, not too bad. Feels like a cold. No fever, but that could be because the cold meds I took are tamping it down. I do feel a little warm and flushed at times.
What kind of cheese are you planning to put on top?

                          • Recover quickly, Cafe friend.

Dr. Mrs. got her shots yesterday and she's not doing wonderfully today, but she is convinced it's the flu shot, not the COVID, that is getting her. (How can she tell? I have long since ceased to think about these mysteries. I merely accept her certainty.)
