As a mental health professional, I endorse this thread. Did you decide to start it because our surgeon general said loneliness is just as dangerous for human health as, say, alcoholism?

Speaking from personal experience, loneliness is one of the main things that can lead to or trigger alcohol/substance abuse in susceptible individuals.

Absolutely. The Covid pandemic took a toll on our adult substance abusers at my hospital. Some came in way more often, and some said they came just to be around other people. Overdose deaths have skyrocketed the past few years, with fentanyl certainly being the main driver, but I don’t doubt the loneliness factor from Covid played a role.
Now, that all said, I still think the shutdowns were the right move. Many more people would have died from Covid than saved from drug overdose deaths if everything had stayed open, but alas, I digress.

Plus, fentanyl-laced street drugs were already an issue before the pandemic.

Absolutely. Getting worse though. Two years ago, none of the adolescent kids on my substance abuse unit used fentanyl; now, half or more purposely use fentanyl, many in the form of “perc 30s.” It was either last year or the year prior that there were 100,000 overdose deaths for the first time in the history of our country, and it’ll only get worse before it (might) get better.
If y’all haven’t already seen it, watch Heroin(e) on Netflix sometime. The amount of money spent on that one county alone to address drug-related healthcare is insane.

Googled that, and those "perc 30s" are some scary good fakes made with fentanyl. Hard to tell the difference without looking closely, which your desperate addict isn't going to do.

When I had surgery on my right foot about 4 years ago, I learned Norco/synthetic opiates did not actually relieve pain, but they sure put me in a blissful "i-d-g-a-f" state about it. And I mixed alcohol with it, so I spent about a week either asleep or in a state of "wow, this is (censored) awesome." When the supply of Norco ran out, Reality yanked me back to Earth and it was certainly not awesome. Later, I learned booze and those pills do not mix and it's a miracle I didn't suffer any long lasting effects.

Despite the bleating from the GQP, it seems that most fentanyl is simply being shipped in by legit carriers. If anyone in Congress actually cared, they could attempt to do something about that.

Wait, you mean having someone carry the drugs through miles and miles of desert and then toss a sack of it over a wall isn't the way people actually decide to get their product to its destination?

Is fentanyl actually manufactured outside the country? I thought the whole point was any inbred idiot could make up a homemade batch.

Not gonna get popped by the border patrol if you never cross a border.

Isn’t what you are thinking of meth?

Guy in Maine a couple weeks ago had 40 lbs of fentanyl shipped to some restaurant. The employees at the restaurant didn’t know what it was so opened it up and called the police then the guy who shipped it showed up an hour later looking for it. Tough times ahead for that guy.

I thought every drug delivery involved a balloon and at least one orifice. (plural of orifice = orifi?)
