      • The pace of play and overall length of game are one of the big hurdles that new "Power 5" officials need to learn to manage when they make the jump from D-II/III or FCS. It's definitely a talking point when they are learning the gig. It's an area where things are "The Same, But Different" when compared to lower level ball.

The interesting thing is D3 delayed the clock implantation until next year. Initially they didn’t like it because they aren’t adding games like D1 and don’t normally have media timeouts like D1 or some D2, so they felt all it was doing was taking more time away from players for no real reason. With that mindset, it seemed expected that there would be a permanent split with the clock rule, but instead it’s now a random one year transition. Not sure what changed that made them vote it in next year.

For this weekend’s games, while a very small sample size, there was a 7% decrease in plays run, but game time only decreased 1% compared to last year’s average. With only 4-5 games that could be a couple reviews taking longer so this week will give a better look at the change. The big reason for the rule change was to decrease total plays, especially with the playoff expansion on the horizon, but for the spectator it’s not deal. Less football for the same time spent, which is the opposite of baseball’s changes.

                • The Atlantic Coast Conference is expanding from its Eastern roots.

The ACC presidents and chancellors met Friday morning and voted to add three new schools -- Stanford, Cal and SMU, sources told ESPN. It will bring the league to 18 members -- 17 will play football full time in the league. The additions will be in all sports and will begin in the 2024-25 school year.
A bad cause requires many words.

There were four holdouts earlier from adding them last month: Clemson, FSU, UNC and NC State. Reportedly NC State flipped.

I don't understand why they would hold out. It sounds like a license to print money.

All contract games with the Grant of Rights. Those four schools were the ones most likely to try to jump ship to the SEC, and the current setup of the ACC means only four schools are needed to block major votes. I can’t remember all the details, but I think the rationale was that if there were ever a vote to extend the Grant of Rights, any new school added would clearly be in favor of it because they came from a worse situation so they would want to lock in, whereas those four are already looking to get their bag in the SEC. I was surprised to see NC State’s name there originally because why take them if you can have the Tar Heels. Maybe they had some conversations and came to the same conclusion.

I broke out of that cult after going to college out east and realizing Boston fans were the same thing as Nebraska fans. At least as a kid Nebraska was still good and they could back up the fan myopia on the field. But it definitely made living back in Omaha during law school amusing.

Worst mistake Nebraska ever did was fire Frank Solich.

$addendum$ - Cal, Stanford and SMU will come at a significant discount, which will help create a revenue pool to be shared among ACC members. SMU is expected to come in for nine years with no broadcast media revenue, sources told ESPN, and both Cal and Stanford were expected to receive 30% shares of ACC payouts.

That money being withheld is expected to create an annual pot of revenue between $50 million and $60 million. Some of the revenue will be divided proportionally among the 14 full-time members and Notre Dame, while another portion will be put in a pool designated for success initiatives that rewards programs that win.

There was another reviewed play just like it that was spectacular. Wasn't a touchdown, but it was a far far more athletic play and it was almost impossible to tell if he was in.

We've got some damn good receivers making our young QB look like a stud.
