    • In 2023, police officers killed more than 1300 people. I don't care what the reasons were surrounding any of these incidents as individual occurrences, something has gone terribly wrong when the police are killing more than 3 people every single day. According to the group Mapping Police Violence, there were only 14 days in 2023 without a police killing. On average, someone was killed by the police every 6 1/2 hours.

In a society with such a proliferation of guns and easy access to them, it is somewhat understandable when the police shoot someone. If you routinely carry a firearm and someone else carrying one threatens you with it or fires at you, you will probably return fire. But that clearly does not explain all or most of these killings.

In so many ways, we are worse than a third world country. In so many ways, we actually are one of trumps "5h!t-hole" countries.

At least leave it to the special task forces from the state boys and the feds.

But how will local pols raise donations if they can’t brag about the millions of taxpayer dollars they’re funneling to their hometown heroes?
If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

            • Indiana's minimum wage is still $7.25/hour, and the median annual income was around $53,000 in 2023. Mishawaka police recruits will now be paid $89,000 a year, starting pay. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that's beyond the 90th percentile for wages in the state.

Mishawaka is adjacent to South Bend and is a city of around 50,000. And remember, that $89,000 is starting pay. Clear probation and start sucking up the OT that all cops love, and the wage will very quickly be in excess of $100,000 annually. And that's for an entry level position.

Anyone who thinks cops are UNDERpaid (and most of those who do also complain about how HIGH taxes are) needs to pay closer attention. Throw in the generous benefits and a pension that virtually no private sector wage earner (and a whole lot of public sector wage earners) will enjoy and it is a wonder cops can complain about their pay with a straight face. Of course these are the same people who are afraid of unarmed black men despite the fact they themselves are armed to the hilt and generally can kill with impunity. At least they are well-off cowards.

              • They don't just fear unarmed Black Men...one cop just lost his job because (and I am not making this up) while a perp was in his backseat he heard and acorn fall fell to the ground yelling "shots fired!!! IM HIT!" and his partner (who was exonerated) then proceeded to fire bullets into the car. Thankfully they all missed the guy in the car.
