This (warning: huge spoilers) agrees with you completely.

    My comments:

I agree that that makes the series a big comedown. The whole point of the character is he is an idealistic hero, albeit one with some world-weariness. He cheats? That's awful.

I don't agree that the Scoobies scene at the end will make a better show. We've had plenty of those shows with a charismatic lead and his perky, smart alecky sidekicks and to this day nobody's come close to recapturing Buffy. Try something new, TV. Do it for me.

Anyway: bah. I want my Mason pure and unhappy. At least they didn't leave him in the embrace of Aimee Semple McSexkitten.

      My response to that:

That can't work. Strickland only finds out about the other 2 jurors after he has gone over to Burger. In fact, thinking about it, Strickland may go over to Burger because Perry pays him to ensure the fix. "So, that's what you think of me, huh? You get to be the ivory tower hero and I'm the skunk in the shadows?"

Also: I think the point is Perry was good enough to get the mistrial fairly. He just didn't trust himself, or the system, to risk it.

That sets up an interesting dynamic going forward: Mason's struggle to believe in himself, and also to believe in the justice system. He has plenty of reasons to doubt each.

I hope they pursue those tensions if there are future seasons. Despite the finale letdown I really hope the show comes back. Rhys is brilliant and if the show follows the course of the Ironsides precursor then Burger will become his archrival and those courtroom contests could be epic: Perry + Della + Drake vs Burger + Strickland.

      • Well I think it can work - the fact Strickland only finds out after the fact doesn't detract from my thought. He was 100% surprised to learn the vote went 9-3 knowing he had only bribed 1 juror. Where did the other 2 dissenting votes come from? Likely from Perry and it turned Strickland off enough to jump ship. It's possible someone else was responsible for the additional bribe currently unknown to the viewers, and Strickland assumed it was Perry still causing him to part ways.

Only if they are deliberately playing with time at the end, which they haven't done at any point before. Chronologically:

          1. Perry and Strickland meet on the bridge. Perry says "this is something only you can do." We realize later it's the bribe.

          2. The mistrial is declared.

          3. Perry and Strickland talk outside the house. Strickland tells Perry he is going to work for Burger.

          4. Strickland pays off the juror and finds out there were 2 other votes.

It is possible the show is showing us 3 and 4 out of order, but they haven't done that trick before.

          • Ahhh - you're absolutely sure 3 happened before 4 at least as far as how it was shown? If that is correct then yes my theory doesn't hold water and I've clearly misremembered the order of things.

Hella fun. Going to be a fun ride.

Finished Season 4 of Homeland. Worst season ending yet. That's probably a good thing at this point. Needs to be as absurd as possible. It's like watching a train wreck. You can't take your eyes off of it.

                  • 3 episodes into Brave New World on PeacockTV. Guardedly optimistic. Spoilers (through 3 episodes):

They've re-imagined the characters and made all the females active and the males passive, as opposed to the book (which after all was written in 1932). Demi Moore, who I generally loathe, is GREAT was Linda, who is on the whole a much better character.

Making Mustafa Mond a black chick is pretty lazy in 2020, but the actress is good at least. Bernard being scaled back to what Lenina essentially was in the book is disappointing. I mean, dude an Alpha Plus, maybe be a little quicker on the uptake, eh? OTOH, Lenina is a huge upgrade albeit obviously a Mary Sue.

The Savages as Dumpies rather than Pueblo Natives is a hamfisted attempt at being Currently Relevant, but it did lead to some pretty good moments on the Reservation.

                        • I watched Fear City, the three episode documentary on Netflix on the efforts of the FBI and DOJ to take down the heads of the mob in NYC in the late 70's and early 80's. Kind of a fun watch.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

                            • Homeland Season 5. My favorite season so far. Lot more spy vs. spy stuff in this season. Quinn story I didn't enjoy but It has impact. There was a lot of satisfaction to the season finale with the resolution of the main antagonist.
