I don't care for those types of guests either, but last night's Ep was more like the Maher of old.

So true. Every so often I try but just can't. Even 10 years ago he would never put up with the lies people spewed. Young(er) Bill would hate this version of himself.

Laugh track is also used as a term for having an audience. Big Bang Theory was in front of an audience too but is considered a show with a laugh track because the jokes pause for effect. Unlike say The Office or Scrubs that have different beats to the jokes.

Pausing for audience reaction just seems so dated now...ruins the flow. Frasier would work better without it. Oh and get rid of Niles' kid we don't need a Niles stand-in. The cast works well on its own without him randomly showing up to be awkward. Niles had purpose this character is just there to be the Anti Frederick.

I've only seen the two free episodes thus far, but this would be my first note; and my second, third, and fourth, to be honest. They're trying to give him a Niles-like character, but man does it miss the mark. Niles worked so well because he gave you a slightly more hoity-toity version of Fraiser to compare against, and play off of, but then there was still a dignity to him; and then of course you had Martin on the other end of the scale, so you got the whole spectrum. Nile's son doesn't have any depth or dignity thus far, maybe he will later on, but they sure don't seem like they put in the effort there or have an actor who can do so. And if I have one overall criticism (and let me re-iterate I only saw the first two episodes), it's that they need a Niles-like character for him to play off of in that manner; I mean, Fraiser will always be an a-hole, but having that type of character to contrast against somehow made him more bearable, and no one in the current show does that; maybe they intended for his co-workers to do that, but from what I've seen they're more grounded than he is.

Bingo. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the bolded above is exactly it. The jokes were so incredibly cheap. And while cheap jokes are fine and not uncommon in Frasier, I don't think anyone was created with the sole purpose of cheap jokes. The only one who came close was Daphne season 1. Thankfully she grew an immense amount throughout the series.

But I'm with both of you, despite having only seen one episode. If you had entirely cut those scenes with him in it, I don't think there would be anything lost.

It was Jar Jar Hyde Pierce.

She's the other one on my "HUH?" list. I think the character is fine as a concept, but the personality needs a complete rework.

But I love the old professor and so far enjoy Freddy and his partner. They seem like necessary characters with a purpose. I really hope they have bigger plans for the harvard lady and David.

                        • I think Harvard lady will grow...but no more than say Bulldog did in the original show. She will never be Roz or anything.

And yeah Niles was to Frasier what Frasier was to the Cheers cast. He gave you someone to eyeroll at as a contrast, but also someone who had heart. He was uppity and snooty and yet a bumbling child at the same time. And it wasn't forced...you could buy DHP really acted that way!

David should have been a one off...he showed up until Freddy does then maybe stops by from time to time since he is at Harvard. He should not bevin multiple episodes with real storylines.

I think the show has promise...it won't be as good as the original but I don't feel like anyone will feel the legacy is hurt by it and I find it interesting on its premise. That little dorky Freddy quit academics for a blue collar job despite all that Frasier and Lillith did for him...very cool.

                            • I didn’t expect Harvard lady to be Roz but it nearly ruins the show for me. Is it overacting? Terrible acting? Bad writing? I dunno it seems like a parody character and it just doesn’t resonate with me. The British guy, sure, he has some decent lines

I'm through 3...he doesn't. The president kind of does but yeah the overacting is what is scoring about her. They kind of give a reason why in episode 3...
