That and the WWE Network stuff.

This. A lot of NBC's hit programming didn't belong to then, they were just the broadcast distributer.

      NBC hit programming:
Cheers, Frasier, Wings, Family Ties, Freaks and Geeks, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Medium... some of NBCs monster programming was produced by Paramount Network Television.

I can't remember if it was something about networks couldn't own the content producers or some law like it that was repealed, or if it was because of the merger/buyout heavy 90s where networks bought so many studios that blurred the lines more.

      • My Name Is Earl was another, right? Fox ran the studio (I think) but NBC aired it. Studio asked for more money and NBC said no, so it died. (Prematurely, imho)

Edit: Btw, search Ethan Suplee now and have your jaw drop.

        • I thought Earl died because it got stupid. The first 2 seasons were good, then it got dumb.

          • Fox’s Belmont coverage was terrible. Audio was so bad I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a microphone in a horse’s mouth. Nothing but two minutes of hissing that drowned out the announcers.

            • Welp, I wasn't expecting my hometown to be highlighted by an ABC 20/20 episode, but here we are. If you want to hear a fu**ed up Northwoods true horror story, watch the "Where Monsters Hide" episode this Friday.

The crime was previously highlighted by a four part documentary on the ID Channel called "Dead North."

Holy, he looks like a powerlifter now(good for him tbh).
I'd say MNIE would've survived another season, maybe 2 either way, they've been kinda running dry on ideas by the end of S4. Still, they ended season on cliffhanger never to be released, so... Was a good show, esp first 2 seasons imo

Watched Further(2012) documentary today(about snowboarding). Made me really want to dust off my board and snowboard goggles this winter Good watch, can def recommend

                • There are some well written books about this stuff...including one by the guy who wrote the books on Leno vs. Letterman (The Late Shift) for the Tonight Show and another on the Conan firing. NBC under Zucker was run so poorly they are lucky they have what they have. Zucker wanted to cancel Scrubs and The Office and extend Friends as long as possible despite the rights fees. They passed on tons of shows too including I believe Lost and Desperate Housewives amongst others. (I think the book is called Desperate Networks)

One story was that I think after season 7 the Friends cast wanted out but NBC had the right to renew. WB was fine collecting fees but also knew syndication was going to be huge so they didn't care. NBC was bleeding money so the Friends cast and their agents kept upping the price every season basically hoping to get canceled. Friends was the only show making money on advertising so Zucker kept saying yes. The salaries for season 10 were nuts (maybe $20 million each) but he knew if Friends was done NBC was in serious financial trouble. Crazy stuff and just bad business...

(I might have details wrong but the basics I remember. The author worked for the LA Times I believe and is well sourced)

Off topic but if you want to blow your mind look at all the shows WBD television created and gets fees from. It's kinda nuts!

                  • I'm through E2 of The Days - the 8-part Netflix series about the earthquake and tsunami that led to the meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear reactor in Japan in 2011. While it's compelling enough for me to continue, it's lacking something that Chernobyl had and vs. the HBO series doing telling their story in only 5 parts, it already feels like some cutting could have improved the overall impact so far.

If I could go back in time, I wouldn't kill Hitler. I'd stop myself from watching the finale.

Right after I killed Nolan at the WW S1 wrap party.
