    It’s not too surprising. The opportunities for a fourth out are incredibly limited.

    In almost every scenario I’m thinking of, it requires a runner giving up on a play or some Merkle’s Boner walk-off. On top of that it requires the other team to know the rule to even try for the fourth out after they’ve gotten three.

    edit: realized my scenario didn’t have anyone scoring, making timing irrelevant.

    This is actually tougher than I thought to come up with.

      There's a great split second where the catcher realizes he can still try to get Baez out and where Baez realizes they can still get him out and they both snap to it. I love it. This is the new "Jameis Winston in the game versus Oregon" or "Sanchez butt-fumble".

        But based on how I read the stack exchange link, if the runner going to first is tagged, time is also irrelevant. Is that not correct here?

          Your interpretation is correct. The Batter-Runner must reach first base for any runs to count. It doesn't matter how he is retired. If he doesn't safely acquire 1st base all runs are voided. Once he touches 1st base legally, then it becomes a timing issue.

            The most hard thing to understand is either 1) how is it the players didn't know this- even ONE really loud one. or 2) they somehow thought there were not 2 outs. The simple play and end of inning turned into a double (fielders choice) and a run.

            Actually- what were the coaches doing? Should they not be yelling to "JUST TOUCH FIRST BASE!"

              Josh Donaldson scored the 2 millionth run in MLB history tonight.

              I remember Bob Watson scoring the millionth run in 1975.

              I have been a conscious baseball fan for half of all runs scored in major league history.
