Urinating Tree recap is great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7cE_J1yclI

There's so many beautiful details to that play.

    • I mean, Baez is there signalling safe while he's still a live runner. And if they get him at any point, the inning is over and the run doesn't count and it's all moot. And they still don't get him.

NGL, first thing I thought when I saw the replay during our game was, "thank all the gods that ever lived it wasn't us."

My favorite thing about the play is it's all moot even after the runner has scored if they just get Baez, and they still don't.

I think this might actually be the stupidest play in baseball history. Mets announcer Gary Cohen was laughing so hard when he saw it I was honestly worried for him.

We're in first. This is so dumb.

Oh, and we signed a different DFAed player last night. He's batting cleanup today.

            Batting averages for today's game:

            2. .185 <-- Opening Day Starter

I would just like to point out, as the coup de grace for this lineup, it won this game. With 3 hits.

I didn't see that until watching the highlights on MLB Network when I got home from work tonight. It was like it was the icing on the cake of that blunder.

I can imagine if this gets mixed up with double plays and men on other bases then this rule can get really, really messy.

It's actually quite simple. All you need to ask is if the Batter-Runner reached 1st base. Once he reaches 1st base the run is counted. If he doesn't reach first base, the run is negated.

                    • I'm reasonably confident the 4th out happened few years back. Could be around the time that substack question was asked.

It's not actually that simple, because you have to ask the same question about every forced runner, and that means you can have situations where the order of outs you get removes the force and screws it up.

I think it's still well-ordered and deterministic (unlike the ECAC tie breaker) but it's both simpler and less simple than I thought it was.

I've always thought "Is it a touched-base force? Time is irrelevant. Is it anything else? Time is relevant."

I think it is. Then why did you say you didn't know the rule, it sounds like you always knew it?

How the hell could I play and watch baseball and score games for fifty years and not just have never seen this but never even known this?

One funny thing about this- it wasn't just the first baseman who had brain fade- the 2nd basement didn't realize the same thing until Baez headed back to first. And the play should have been just like a routine strike out/ dropped ball- just a slow toss to first, and nothing counted.
