The rural brain drain is real. Kids that are smart enough will go to college and most likely never return. Fix that and the rural white America problem is taken care of.

      • 538 is doing their part to scare people. Beyond their weak "Minnesota to Red" article referenced earlier today Nate is tweeting out how Biden's national lead might be the result of Bluer States going Bluer then posting the odds of a Biden victory with X% of a win in the popular vote. As far as I can tell he hasnt done the same analysis with the swing states or deep red states to offset the effect though I have to believe that is coming.

I get people need to be kept on alert but it seems the last few days outright pessimism is on the rise and now pundits are feeding into it. Biden is polling right about Obama levels (despite the RNC bump) and yet if you believe some of these people Biden might as well quit already.

This has been true for literally 250 years. It is never going to change. Kids who are on the ball want to escape the idiocy of the countryside. They may come back someday to settle down as Jeffersonian Gentleman Slaveholders, er, Job Creators, but in their 20s they want to be with other people who can think and speak in complete sentences.

Well I have said this many times now, but if Biden loses, I doubt very much I will BELIEVE the results, although accepting them is not up to me. I also do want to tear down the electoral college and I already believe that if trump is president for 4 more years, America will be destroyed. I doubt I'll riot much though.

If Biden loses, the Democrats, as a national political party, need to fold up their tent and go home. You go 0-2 against Donald J. Trump, that's like losing a doubleheader to the Washington Generals.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

I don’t think the Generals had an ardent fan base that made up 40% of the crowd and would cheer them on no matter how many flagrant fouls they committed.

Nor did the Generals have others in the crowd who claimed not to support the Generals, but would support all the actions of the Generals for four years while vilifying everything the Globetrotters did. And then when the Globetrotters fans called out such “neutral” supporters, they were told they were simply wound too tight.

A Biden loss would be a stain on America as a whole, because it would implicate the 40% of the country who ardently support Trump, the 5% who don't like him but go along with him for abortion/tax cuts/gun rights/whatever pet issue they have, every liberal third party voter who throws a hissy and doesn't vote to remove Trump, and the system as a whole given that Biden could win by 7 million votes and still lose the EC.

What it puts into stark relief is that the next time the Dems control both chambers of Congress and the Presidency, a bunch of things need to happen right away:
                          1) Kill the Senate fillibuster fully
                          2) Expand the house to at least 750 members, preferably 1000, to help offset the electoral college issues caused by the Senate representation (and provide better representation to boot)
                          3) Grant statehood to DC and Puerto Rico (and any other territories that want it - Guam, American Samoa, whoever).
                          4) Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act
                          5) Depending on how far gone the Courts have gotten, expand the judiciary at all levels by adding new positions.

All of those can be done by simple legislation without requiring constitutional amendments.

I'd be surprised if #1 occurs, although of all of them that might be the most likely. I think there are still people in Congress that understand that when you change the rules to limit what the minority party can do, you had better be careful because there will likely come a day when you are back in the minority party.

I can't see them expanding the House, like you suggest. I don't think any of those people want to swap being 1 in 435 for 1 in 1000. Plus, just from a physical plant perspective, you have the House chamber, offices, caucus or hearing rooms and everything else to think of when you more than double the size of your group. Also, I don't think we've ever seen expansion like you're talking about. In the past, the numbers have gone up in very small increments. I could see them increasing it slightly if D.C. and P.R. are added as states, but I don't seem the just going from 435 to 1000.

I actually have no problem with #3 and 4, and I'd say that along with #1, these would have the best chance of your list to get approval.

I doubt they'd do #5 because I think most people, including members of Congress, would conclude that if you aren't changing the SCOTUS, you really aren't implementing any change by adding new positions, so why go through the expense.

Ask anyone making this argument if they still vote for Trump knowing this will happen, "Why do you hate America?".
