    That's amazing and hilarious.

    I'm actually curious now how fast a "normal" train would have to go.

    Ok, super quick math:
    V = (220k tons / 5k tons * (13.5 knots)^2) ^ 0.5 = 103 mph

    Initially I forgot to include the 13.5^2 inside the square root and laughed very hard at the answer until I realized where I went wrong.

    Anyways, imagine a fully loaded train at 103 mph running into the side of a mountain. That's the energy here.

        Unlikely. How much cargo does a widebody cargo jet hold? You're paying for speed not efficiency ;-)

        In scrolling through the reactions to this on twitter, I found myself digging into Ocean Logistics Twitter. Sounds like a couple of european companies were already exploring the cost and time to go around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the fees through the Suez. Plus you don't have to go through the Arabian Sea or the Gulf of Aden. Seven transits in the last month alone. I know that's a tiny, tiny fraction, but it means they're trying it and that means someone has done the math.

        Also, holy ****, they got the Maersk Denver out of the canal. That was the ship that was immediately behind the Ever Given. They somehow turned a 300-m vessel around. Crazy.

                IINM the Panama Canal is too narrow for some modern ships.

                  Ships will be as large as can safely traverse the most time and cost-efficient waterways.

                  No, they're not stuck. They're transiting the locks in the Panama Canal.

                                My foreign policy professor, Walter LaFeber (who was wonderful as well as brilliant) said that Europe ran the world from 20 May 1498 (the day da Gama landed in India) to 30 Oct 1956, the day Israel told John Foster Dulles that the UK and France would back them in military action action against the US if we interceded to end their invasion, and Ike called their bluff and told the UK and France GFY.

                                It was a good run. 5x as long as our dominance is going to last.
