What's amazing is the amount of xenophobia those who support the bill have shown.
This entire thing is all about the Republican party picking winners and losers in business, and using the law to steer a highly profitable social media mouthpiece to their conservative monied backers to use for their own nefarious ends.

It's what fascist or Communist states would do.

Traditionally, you craft a bill with language which refers to general characteristics, the aggregation of which happens to apply to only one entity.

Famously, the first progressive income tax had a top marginal rate that applied only to John D. Rockefeller.

That isnt bad faith...Bytedance isn't the problem and you know it. Bytedance is not why all of this is happening.

And sorry but this is not censorship...that is a strawman. Content isn't the the problem. Why would Dems censor their own constituency? The problem isnt whats on Tik Tok it is who has access to it and what they can do with it.

All SM is a cancer...but Tik Tok is insidious on a whole different level. I am telling you go sub in a Middle School some time kids are addicted to Tik Tok worse than any drug I have seen. I have had students threaten me cause I stopped them from dancing and posting mid class.

And for the record...I would be fine if Twitter and Facebook faced the same scrutiny. I don't trust Zuck or Elmo with these algos either. They are all being weaponized...and it's tearing the fabric of society apart.

I get you like Tik Tok but come on.

Don't get me wrong the frauds like Mnuchin are just as bad but Tik Tok is a friggin threat and dangerous to the kids. It's scary to see...
Don't argue in bad faith. Xi and the CCP doesn't own ByteDance. Over 60% of ownership is US based businesses already.

What they do have though is the heavy hand of the authoritarian regime of the CCP who can (and will) wisk away the local staff on a whim. Yes, thats wrong. No. TIKtok, or any company, shouldn't have that threat lingering.

But you pretending that the CCP potentially surveiling 150 Million people, or pushing content to "the youths" while ignoring that the US Government Alphabet Organizations *already* f*cking do this with US based tech companies is surprising.

There are parts of this bill I will say need to be implemented across the entire industry, but to single out *by name* one business is a bridge too far. I can't believe I'm agreeing with Rand F*cking Paul.

What I see happening today is what I can only imagine what happened in the late '60s and early '70s regarding the Vietnam War once uncensored front line coverage was broadcast back home.God forbid we humanize innocent people caught in the middle during these conflicts. Imagine a world where your governement said "Nah, we can't allow the photo 'The Terror of War (1972)' to be published."

And for the record, no, I would not be fine if Putin owned TikTok. Nor would I be supportive if Gazprom Media, owned by Russia as well owned TikTok. But if there was an unaffiliated with State Media app based in Russia that was popular I would have the same concerns: lets fix it industry wide, not call out a company by name.
