I'm sure libertarians love him and think he did nothing remotely unethical or illegal.

          • Last week, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik called Dems "pedo grifters" and railed that Dems didn't "...present ANY PLAN or urgency to address the nationwide baby formula crisis..." Last night she and a majority of the GOP voted against funding to address that crisis.

You can point directly at the monopolistic practices that are allowed to fester in the United States as the root cause for the formula crisis. That being said, the Feds should have had baby formula on their radar since the pandemic began as a "need" item and should have been on the ball quicker with the solutions they have now put forward (production act, shipments from overseas, better distribution nationally of the resources we do have, etc.

The fact that the Republicans again use and issue to hammer the Democrats and OFFER ZERO solutions to the problems themselves is a major problem in this country and one that is likely to finish the country's destruction.

You expected Trump's government to have a handle on things like that?

The federal government buys half the formula that's produced in this country. They desire to buy it as cheaply as possible, so they enter into exclusive contracts with manufacturers. If you don't have one of those contracts, why compete?
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

So, Trump's "New NAFTA" agreement he pushed through put the kibosh to inspecting, approving, and importing Canadian infant formula.

So this puts a strain on the already monopolistic formula makers in the US.

And the Republicans blame "Biden's FDA" for holding up the Abbott plant despite them being a source of the bacteria.

Privatize the profit, socialIize the losses. The GQP can go get fucked. And not in the fun Madison Cawthorn way either.

Your attitude on all this stuff is oh my gosh nothing can be done. It's the Federal Governement's fault that it's happening and they can't do anything to fix it.

WRONG. The causer of the problem is the most likely to have the answers. Dollars to doughnuts Republicans are responsible for your scenario that has you so handcuffed.

This is really the entire core of the entire United States economy. As built by Reagan and his minions. And we just keep feeding the beast when what we really need to do is drown it in the bathtub.

No, my attitude is not that nothing can be done. My attitude is that I'm not sure there is anything that needs to be done, at least on any sort of permanent basis.

The system with respect to baby formula actually works pretty well. Think about it. Up until a month ago had you ever heard of any problems with it? Probably not.

The government gets what it wants. It can purchase formula for low income people who need it. The government knows the supply will be there. It also maintains strict regulatory control over something that we want to make sure is safe.

At the same time, the manufacturers have a fixed customer, they know their price, and they can just keep the plants humming along.

Yeah, a major plant was taken off line. But that's a good thing. The system worked. Possibly contaminated product was identified and the government took the steps necessary to protect the public.

By July we won't even hear another word about formula shortage. Just like toilet paper. When was the last time you heard about toilet paper shortage.

None of this is helped by people running around with their hair on fire screaming DO SOMETHING!!!!

                              • No, the system failed. If the system worked we wouldn't be flying military jets to foreign countries to pick up baby formula. We also wouldn't be using the Defense Production Act or whatever the fuck it is called to get more formula made faster.

                                The system should not fail.

Running out of baby formula is akin to running out of insulin.

We only have (4) producers of baby formula in the United States. This is economic epic failure on a grand scale. It needs to stop.
