The changes happening to our department (and overall business unit) are being announced this week apparently. I emailed my manager this morning - she just got back from vacation - to give her an update on my schedule. I told her I was going to be working remotely on Wednesday at my mom's - she's having her washing machine repaired (I hope) after it's been broken for a month - it's a big mess. I need to be there. Was supposed to take Thursday and Friday off to go to the Cape but a) my friend I'm going with has some potential conflicts and b) the weather is supposed to suck. She IMs me and says "I saw your email." Then nothing for a minute. I knew immediately she was IMing me about the changes. I don't think any of the changes would be affecting me personally but her reaching out to me directly while in a meeting learning about the changes now has me a little worried. Hmmmmm.

I want to write back to a customer asking why they have a policy that makes poor business sense and contributes to the destruction of our planet that much faster.

We put some stickers on their product. They want to dual brand it, so we were supposed to ship the stickers separate, so when they decide which brand to put on it, they can put the stickers on. We ask if we can send the decals and for them to hit us with a rework fee. No, they want to return the product and have us remove the stickers, then ship it back with the loose decals. Whatever, but the product is 5' x 4' x 3' so that's a lot of shipping cost and is dumb.

So, I'm here in the office today. My manager is here. Her manager (my former manager) is here. And her manager is here (the head of our entire department). And they're all whispering and chatting behind closed doors about the changes that will be announced tomorrow (I'm assuming). As I mentioned, I will be working remotely from my mom's tomorrow. I think my manager had wanted me in the office but I told her I can't. I have to believe they know everything so why can't the tell me this afternoon? I think if my position was being eliminated they may have done that so I'm assuming my job is safe. My belief is that our team will be restructured and I will be reporting to one of my colleagues. And maybe they need to tell whoever that is first.

It’s time to set the record straight. What do you really get working part-time with UPS?

I’m not signing up so I can’t read the replies but apparently the company has been getting torched in the replies. Mostly because the union put this on their socials and said “yeah, tell them the truth.”

One of the other big hospitals in Boston is going live on Epic and is investing heavily into it. They're doing so kind of stupidly, though. Normally you need X staff for maintenance, and X+Y for the implementation. The typical move is to upstaff with temps, contract hires and consultants for that implementation and then reduce down to your baseline FTE staff. But this hospital is spending obscene money and using exclusively FTEs. Meaning, they're attracting Epic analysts from all over (we've lost almost half a dozen to them) via outlandishly high pay, but in a year's time or so, they're going to cut staff by 1/2 to 2/3 because you simply don't need that kind of workforce.

So a big part of me is cheering the folks moving over there on. Go get yours! But do it with open eyes that it's almost certainly going to end with a major layoff 3-4 months after the Epic go-live.


My company is competitive but on the medium/medium-low end, and this other company is simply spending more than anyone can compete with.

Just got the conference call dial in from the head of our team to discuss all the changes. A friend who works in another department that used to be part of my department just IMd me while her team's meeting was going on right now and she told me that they were all moving back to our department. I was like I know nothing! Our meeting is at noon!" But I like getting the dirt before the rest of my team.
