Worked 12 hours yesterday. Thankfully, this is not a regular thing. Today I am tired and unfocused. Further cements my opinion that I'd like my health care providers to not be working long hours.

Question: when the song/movie '9 to 5' came out, did people actually work those hours? I have never started work that late, nor had just 8 hours without a lunch time added

They did, and often do (though 9 often becomes 8 or 8:30 and 5 is as likely to become 4 as it is 6).


I have a 9-5 job, although I haven't worked only 40 hours in some time. I go out of my way to limit hours worked (working from home means you're just a room away...), but even though I may technically "start checking out" at 5, I'm almost always on until 5:30-6 when my girlfriend peels me away. And today I got started at 8 for a meeting (holy hell, scheduling a bunch of oncology and pharmacy staff it difficult). I have meetings until 6:30 today.

As long as we cover core hours they don't care. Much.
Core are usually 10-3. You are still expected to work 8 but even that's fungible in both directions. If you regularly get your work done, you aren't chained to a desk.

That said, it's usually 45-50/wk for me. Usually 8:30-5:30, sometimes more, sometimes less. The bad weeks are awful though.

I understand that blue collar workers are slaves who have to follow their fascist owners' whims. And we should plow those owners under, give all their wealth to those workers, and then change our economic system so they are never abused like that again.

But white collar employees who martyr themselves to their jobs are either getting something from their narcissistic vanity posturing, or they are dopes.

Exception: doctors and public defenders and teachers and emergency responders in general. Instances in which work actually has some meaning often have long hours, and the people who work them are heroes.

But if you're a broker or a corporate lawyer or a businessdrone who does that? You're an idiot.

There is no more honor in work than in a convict serving his term.

It's more of the "get this done or else" mentality that is served in the Service/Retail industry. If you can't do the job you would be ejected for a new body in the chamber... This is the root of the whole "Great Resignation" debate...

It's coming to a head where us workers have the power (I've seen a 21% wage increase since Nov. 2019 for just showing up). And at my job, we're gonna need another boost to stay viable pretty soon...

I don't despise manual labor, I despise coerced labor. And I don't despise the laborer, I have nothing but sympathy. They are slaves. Who could despise a slave? One despises the people who enslave them and live off them.

Every day, in every way, organize, organize, organize.

And if possible, self-organize. Have it grow from the bottom up, and hold on to your power. The last people you should trust are well-meaning but soft-handed people like me who are allies but do not have skin in the game. We'll always abandon you the second it becomes personally inconvenient.

I know the comment about your career mattering is made in jest, but this is a real thing...

I work in logistics in the grocery world... Without me y'all aren't getting many of the products you use daily on the store shelves... And currently the industry is at a labor breaking point... Someone's gonna have to pay up and cut into profits pretty soon if they want to stay afloat and viable.

I love it when IT folks scream about meetings before 9am local time being a burden. Our firm is spread across all four US time zones and we're working with a global client (Colorado + Brazil + Serbia) so our window of available times is already limited. Plus, it's only once a week - adapt and deal with it.
