    • A brilliant GFY to DeathSantis.

Democrat Charlie Crist on Saturday tapped Miami-Dade County teachers union president Karla Hernandez-Mats as his running mate as he challenges Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in Florida.

Crist, a congressman who served as the state’s Republican governor a decade ago, announced United Teachers of Dade President Hernandez-Mats as his lieutenant governor pick at a brief rally in South Florida, describing her as a compassionate former teacher of special needs children with the “heart” necessary to govern.

“Caring, loving, empathic, compassionate — that’s what we don’t have in the governor’s office right now and that’s what you deserve to have in the governor’s office,” Crist said before introducing Hernandez-Mats to the crowd.

The selection of Hernandez-Mats ensures a campaign focus on education, an arena where DeSantis has had success in animating his conservative base through his hands-off approach to the coronavirus pandemic and policies limiting classroom discussions of race and LGBTQ issues.

Crist secured the Democratic nomination this week after a campaign that focused heavily on criticizing DeSantis as a “bully” who gained political prominence through his willingness to exploit cultural divides on gender, sexuality and race.

      • Remember when Texas passed a law a few weeks back requiring:
"Sign must contain "In God We Trust" US flag, Texas flag and "may not depict" any other words or images,"
Well, an artist from Florida has taken Texas up on the challenge and raised donations (per the law) to produce signs (again, per the law) thst read "In God We Trust," with an American flag and Texas flag.

        The signs:

The artist is hoping to start donating these signs to Texas schools and institutions soon.

Yeah, the last thing we should have before someone runs for re-election for a certain position is something where they have to talk about what they did during their first term in that position. Can't have those darn facts influencing the electorate.

It's not much different from the urban/rural dynamic in most states. One daughter lived in Atlanta for about 8 years, had a female partner for a couple of those years, and another has lived in greater Nola for about the same number of years and has had a black partner for most of that time. Both are very liberal, and both liked living in those cities. You drive out of those cities (though Nola is not even really a big city) in any direction, and it's a whole nother ballgame.

Minneapolis is a great and liberal city, but an hour's drive in any direction is also a different story.

North Dakota is different. You drive an hour out of Fargo and it's just as vibrant and diverse as it is in the inner city.

That's why they call it "the American Athens."

Half an hour outside any city in the US is Mississippi. That's why Hate Radio is popular in 49 states (unsure of Hawaii).

What’s funny is most of the posters on here acknowledge it’s more the urban/rural divide than North/South or coastal/flyover. Louisville and Lexington are liberal; Bowling Green votes for Democratic representatives at the local level. I think they mean to jest, but the frequency of posts suggesting two different countries makes me think they’d actually do it if they were King/Queen. I’m glad Joe Biden has visited Kentucky twice already to express solidarity with us. He gets it.

                              • Gets what? That the Republicans in 1980 started the process of creating a divide in this country so ****ing wide that 3 people own over 75% of the wealth?
