Ice fishing can be fun. It's like baseball. Being at the ballpark is like 10%. It's really just enjoying friends, beer, and the outdoors.

    • Ice fishing is a blast and one of the things I miss most. I have a group of friends with which we've rented 2-3 houses on Mille Lacs every February for a weekend going back 25 years. 6 bunks and 10 holes per house, stereo, oven and stove top, heated, TV/DVD if you have time. Bring bean bags, footballs, the bar on shore is usually at most a 5 minute drive, we do a fish fry on Saturday night. It's serene and at our ages nothing gets out of control - just a fun way to hang out with buddies.

      • There's a dinosaur in every crowd, and this will draw eyerolls and groans, but today I'll be it.

My family has owned a place on Lake Metigoshe since the 30s. My father would take us kids ice fishing a handful of times every winter. Metigoshe stretches into Manitoba, so it's probably like International Falls or Baudette in the winter. We'd cut holes through 2+ feet of ice with a heavy steel bar with a chisel at one end, making sure we had the leather strap at the top end on our wrist so we didn't lose it when it broke through. No shanties, heaters, or warming devices except the car, which we often didn't have when we fished anywhere near the cabin. Just hot cocoa. Wood tip-ups. We usually caught a lot of perch so the action was pretty constant, but one challenge was keeping the holes from freezing over. We didn't go out if it was real windy, but cold didn't keep us away. We'd take a puck and sticks and play around when we weren't actively fishing. We were well dressed and equipped for the cold (but didn't have rubberized gloves or mitts that I can recall). We kids always had a great time. I think Dad would just as soon have stayed home and read, but he tried to get us off our butts and outside when he could.

And yes, we usually walked to school, but it wasn't far and it wasn't uphill both ways. As a Minnie poster from years ago would have pointed out, it wasn't uphill either way.

            This is the correct response.

A high school in Alabama is demanding that a Jewish student apologize for making them “look bad” after he publicly exposed with video evidence that a history teacher was making classmates stand and give a Nazi salute in class. (per @wdhn)

                  Huh.

Illinois actually leads the nation in facial recognition blocking laws. So much that Facebook is currently embroiled in a statewide lawsuit (two claimants have filed an injunctiom blocking the settlement until another court hearing this month) AND Google neuters the Nest software in the state to prevent it from utilizing facial recognition to tell you who's at the door (like it can in the 49 other states).

                  • Not a facial recognition thing, but apparently San Francisco has been running the dna of rape victims through database to see if the victim is wanted for any crimes and they just found one.

there’s one way to get even fewer rape victims to come forward

Holy cow. The city did that? ACAB, but FFS SF's city government should be to the left of Marx.

Agreed. I'd think Dallas or one of the Florida cities for something like this, not SF...

It certainly appears to have originated with the cops, but I have a hard time believing the prosecutors ( who have been quick to throw the cops under the bus) knew nothing about this. They never thought to ask, “hey, where did you get the dna?”
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.
