Yeah, that's what I wondered, is whether it's related to the two large air bases.

Obviously there aren't a lot of tax dollars sent to Washington from North Dakota citizens, since there aren't any people. Furthermore, farmers are sort of notorious for shrinking their taxable income near year end through various methods. Thus, any money we receive back in the form of federal aid is going to seem like a lot compared with what the citizens sent in, but it appears that a relatively small portion (relative to other states) is necessary to meet revenue needs for the state budget.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Good governance? It's from Ohio. That immediately makes it an oxymoron.

In case you're interested, if I had my way, all the aborted tissue would be sent to any institution doing fetal tissue research or to those who would like to but are now not allowed to do so.

Sorry. I can't ever recall saying anything even close to that. Now, I am getting older (and at my age the best thing about getting older is that you still can) so my memory isn't what it used to be. If you can find a post where I said something to that effect (and since I average a post about every three days or so it shouldn't be too hard to find), I will be happy to provide you with a mea culpa and an apology for suggesting that you get your facts straight.

      • So Pennsylvania's Senate is going stupid today, while the GOP attempts to steal a State Senate seat that's been certified all the way to the PA Supreme Court. Trump has destroyed our republic.

Not Dump per se. The GOP and the Right in general have always had fascist leanings -- it is intrinsic within conservatism. Dump just showed they can be as brazen as they want and there won't be any consequences because there is literally no level below which a Republican voter will not sink.

In a way these mini-coups are a testament to our egalitarianism, just as Dump's election was. This filth will have a voice no matter how vicious and stupid they are. There is no Illuminati Conspiracy to save us from them. Whatever balls the Deep State had in Dallas 1963 are long gone.

federal farm bail outs & subsidies become income for farmers, which they pay income tax on (or buy goods with and pay sales tax). This is not factored into your 19% but still contributes to your state's budget indirectly (that 19% probably consists of direct payments from the feds to the state, like medicare funding, highway funding, etc)

Maine gets more federal money back than it pays in. A lot of that is due to multi-billion dollar contracts at Bath Iron Works to build destroyers (but we're also the oldest state, so there are lots of Medicare and Social Security dollars flowing in). We're pretty big moochers for a blue state

Huh, I did not suspect this. I'd have guessed MT, ND, maybe IA, KS, or NE. I'd never have put ME on that list.

ND is actually a pretty young state, with the % of people over 65 down near the bottom in the list of states. https://www.prb.org/which-us-states-are-the-oldest/

Now, I'm sure rufus will be along shortly to claim that's because we killed them all with Covid. My hunch is that it has something to do with the idea that once you've lived in ND for 65 years and finally reach retirement age, you reach the conclusion there might be somewhere warmer on the planet in which to reside.
