That was the old bad gen-one turf. It was horrible. Ozzie Smith would tell stories about it. Cincy and Three Rivers (PIT) had the same surface but STL had the worst.

But even the new magic carpet, turf-like (with infill) is good for +20 over ambient.

Did they 'die', or were they the DDR version of Tuskegee.

I played a game on the original turf in the Metrodome. It felt like you were playing on the worst Putt Putt surface one could imagine with no padding whatsoever. And even as a 15 year-old I thought "this place is a dump" when on the field, in the lockers rooms, etc. How the MSFC got away with that giant POS is beyond me.

Yeah I did too...saw lots of injuries.

The only thing worse than falling on that surface was trying to field a short-hop.

Best part of that kind of turf was the Frankenstein seams. A spinning ball clips one of those and you're down a testicle.

I think we have a favorite for the shot put…

31 year old World Record broken. And let’s be honest, Randy Barnes wasn’t clean either, he got caught and suspended for PEDs in his career.

Edit: Barnes got popped twice and hit with a lifetime ban in 1998.

I would say that a majority of the results from '88 Seoul should probably be suspect. Everyone from the Eastern Bloc and probably half of the Allied countries was doping somehow, except for maybe the demonstration bowling teams.

Barnes set his record in 1990, then he was busted months later yet his record stood. But yeah, 1980, 1984, and 1988 were all pretty tainted.

                          Some questionable records:
Men’s Discus set in 1986 by GDR Juergen Schultz
Men’s Hammer Throw set in 1986 by USSR Yury Sedykh
Women’s 100m and 200m set in 1988 by USA Florence Griffith Joyner
Women’s 400m set in 1986 by GDR Marita Koch
Women’s Shot Put set in 1987 by USSR Natalya Lisovskaya
Women’s Discus set in 1988 by GDR Gabriele Reinsch
