    • Just took my first flight since the pandemic started. Flew to Las Vegas last Wednesday and returned home last night.

Contrary to some of the horror stories about flights, and passengers, both flights were actually pretty calm, even orderly. No one was getting told to wear their mask in the airports or on the planes. When the gate agents asked everyone to stay seated until their rows were called, pretty much everyone complied, contrary to my experience before covid.

There were a fair number of people in Las Vegas, but I wouldn't call it over-crowded at all. Most employees at the casinos and restaurants were wearing masks full time. Most tourists were not.

I will say that they must be selling tons of weed in Nevada because it was pretty tough to walk anywhere outside along the strip and not get a contact high. That was maybe the biggest change I noted.

Also pretty obvious they are having problems finding employees. Even though there were quite a few people in the casinos, a lot of table games without dealers, a lot of bars and restaurants running short staffed, etc...

Edit: There was one surprising incident at the Las Vegas airport, though. The security line that I was in suddenly came to a stop. I was trying to figure out why when a handful of additional TSA agents showed up. They were talking to a guy about his backpack. They then opened it up and pulled out a knife with about a five inch blade. One of the TSA agents looked at the guy and said, "seriously dude, you thought this was ok???" Jeebus, what was that guy thinking.

That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

      • Vegas TSA doesn't fck around either. Last time I went through the Pre line there, it was all, "You know the rules, folks. Let's keep it moving and don't give us a dumba55 reason to hold up the line."

        • My flights were fine too last few times.

Cancelled my upcoming Vegas trip and pushed it a month. The COVID numbers in Nevada kind off irked the gf so she guilted me which is OK I actually picked up some shifts and could use the money. Delta is taking their sweet time getting me my credit though...probably because customer service is way understaffed.

FWIW, I'm hearing that even the Diamond line often has a 3-hour callback time. They have practically no agents, let alone ones with substantial experience. Which tells you what they're paying them.

            • Yeah I know...it is fine just a first world problem ;^)

And yeah they must pay these people nothing...probably why they support the GOP so hard :^)

              • I really really really want to go back to Vegas but between the airline disaster show and delta numbers in vegas, I'll wait it out.

                • Well the nice thing is Vegas itself will take every precaution it has to because under no circumstances can they shut down again. The rest of Nevada may be the Zombie Apocalypse but Vegas will do what it has to do. That is why I am not worried about moving my trip back a month by the time September rolls around they will have a plan in place.

As for airlines I think that is being a bit overblown. No one I know who flies a lot has seen it and even a good friend who is a flight attendant doesn't seem to be seeing it. I mean video doesn't lie it is happening but it is not an epidemic. From all accounts the vast vast vast majority are following the rules and everything is going smoothly.

                  • My other issue with Vegas now is that 100% of the fun of Vegas, to me, is the EVERYTHING HAPPENING ALL THE TIME EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK insanity. If you have to take precautions - reduced capacity, masks, whatever - I'll wait until it's safe to go full throttle.

I'm not saying precautions aren't good policy, I'm saying that I'll just wait it out until they aren't necessary.

                    • I have a problem supporting a city with a metro-wide pop. of about 2 1/2 million people (and growing fast) which is located in a desert where every single drop of water is precious. They say they are doing all they can with rules and technology, but it will only get worse as climate change accelerates the water shortage disaster.

I agree. That is why I didn't put up much of a fight about moving my trip.

                        • Just got back from a trip deep into enemy territory -- leaving the safe haven of Bar Harbor, ME (where Maine CDC estimates >95% of people age 12 and older in my zip code are fully vaccinated) to Fayetteville West Virginia/New River Gorge National Park and then to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. I had a great time, and it was so nice to escape the absolute insanity that is Bar Harbor, ME / Acadia National Park right now. I will say, even as someone that's driven through some rural Maine towns where the paper mills have closed (see Millinocket and East Millinocket) the poverty I saw in some of the rural West Virginia towns was pretty depressing.

Looking forward to a quick trip to Quebec City next month now that I'll be allowed to cross the border.

Dr. Mrs. just got back from a secret spy mission to Mississippi.

She was... unimpressed... with our ideological adversaries.

But she finally saw The River, which every American must see to really be a citizen, along with the Grand Canyon and both oceans.

I saw The River after a night drinking in the French Quarter (multiple occasions). Does that count? The number of rats scurrying around Woldenberg Park late at night is..... impressive.

                                Yes, it counts.

I first saw The River waiting for my friend's car to be repaired after I ripped the muffler off the bottom driving over a standpipe in the parking lot of a Memphis Taco Bell.

Gotta admit, reading Huckleberry Finn and Life on the Mississippi gave me a lump in my throat not unlike Jeb2020's Mom after one of her nights blowing guys behind the candle pin bowling alley for nickels.
