If you want to stay near the Armory, two blocks north, at 530 4th St S is Boludo (https://www.boludo.com/). It’s a mix of South American food and pizza. Award winning, but I’m only in the area for lunch as I work in the building to which it’s attached, but I don’t have enough time to go there for lunch.

I enjoy Town Hall Brewery. I forgot to mention that one. I can't remember the last time I ate there, but it's probably cromulent as well. The beers all tend to be excellent. I always make a point to stop by their booths at beer festivals.

Oh, and last time I was at Butcher & the Boar, I was extremely unimpressed. The first time I was there it was great. The second time, not great. THen the bill came I was very unhappy.

Edit: Brits is cromulent as well. WOuldn't be the top of my list. Wouldn't be the bottom.
Well depending on when you went and where the second time you likely weren't really eating at Butcher and the Boar anyways. The restaurant "shut down" and while it re-opened it moved somewhere else. The old spot is called "The Butcher's Tale" and from all accounts sucks hard. The "original" is now in the North Loop and is owned by the same company that does Parlour and Borough. Funny thing is they have the old menu while Butcher's Tale has the chef. (who replaced the original who was much better) From what I heard there was a lot of drama involved in that.

For some reason the start of this comment conjured fond memories of Stefon from SNL.

ih, and reservations. Necessary- even in summer when most people are up north. Parlour doesn’t take them but I think everyone else does

This is very true, I don't think I ate dinner at a single chain restaurant when I was flying in to work in MSP back in 2016/2017. Or at least, not a national chain (Ike's is a chain, but very small and local to MSP).

Don't even go there. Fargo has way more Olive Gardens per capita. Compared to GF, the Twin Cities' bowling alley bistro scene is nonexistent.

I honestly don't mind localish chains for the most part. Carbones and Broadway for example. Or revival and catrinas.

But, at some point they go beyond what I would call local. Dairy Queen, for example. Even carbones is getting there. But most are owned and operated locally.

That said, the twin cities really does have an incredible food scene. And theater. And beer. And whiskey. And... well, you get the picture.

                          • Local city chains can be quite good. 3-5 locations seems to be about the limit before quality goes in the toilet.

red cow and revival are examples of good local places with 3-4 locations

I am with you except this. There is only one acceptable Broadway (since the original closed) and that is the one in Robbinsdale. That has the original recipe for pizza. The rest of the stores have cheap knock offs that taste nothing like the original. Very similar to how Red's Savoy was back in the day...
