  • Finished the Rollin vampire cycle. In all honesty they are all almost the same movie. Shiver had the best sets and production, Requiem has a 20-minute sequence of pure hardcore pornography. (To be fair, it fits the story, so I guess: not gratuitous?) I'm glad I've seen them, I get why he was considered A Thing, but it's all so dated now it's mostly an experience about hey look what counted as a racey intellectual French art film in 1969?

The constant return to the same cemetery and beach and castles actually makes it comforting. You get the idea that the people who made the movies were delving into one another's and their own psychotropic experiences with child like curiosity.

And the girls are cute, despite the armpit hair.

I give the whole thing a B-. I don't really recommend it (it's expensive AF).

      • The Photographer of Mauthausen. Based on the real story of a photographer trying to preserve evidence of the horrors committed inside a Nazi concentration camp. I'm going to borrow some review commentary because I think they do a better job than I could trying to describe how wonderful of a film this is.

Set in a concentration camp, the film balances Hitchcock-like suspense with stark illustrations that some horrors cannot, and will not, be trivialized.

The Photographer of Mauthausen's major achievement lies in documenting a period in Spanish history that’s received shorter shrift.

Mar Targarona's suspenseful, unrelentingly graphic depiction of the horrors of absolute evil juxtaposed with hope, purpose, and compassion is both searing and heartening.

        • Hey Disney, we don't need a back story for Cruella De Vil.

If we're going to do back stories for villains, how about Scar or Jafar?

It's Disney, of course they're going to do a villain backstory for little girls who want to grow up to be Disney executives. ;-)

Dude, WB is already 2/3rds the way through a Harry Potter/Dumbledore prequel trilogy with their Fantastic Beasts movies. It spread long ago.

She at least wrote those books (or stories...I forget/never cared cause I never read Potter) and the Potter nerds wanted those films. (ask my gf) WB is doing it with Hunger Games too although there is a novella they are basing that on. No one, and I mean NO ONE wanted a Cruella prequel or Wonka Prequel. Its like they forget the Oz origin film...

Di$ney has been the king of crappy sequels since I was a kid...but this is a whole new level. And now it isn't just them it is every studio because they all have streaming services to fill. That is why Amazon is paying half a billion to make an LOTR series for no reason and HBO Max has like Eleventy Billion GOT shows in the pipeline. I mean this is getting out of control even by Hollywood standards.

                      • The new Hunger Games movie is based on a full novel, not a novella. Much like the third book in the original series, it wasn’t good.

And the Fantastic Beasts movies are just work with Rowling as a co-writer on the scripts, no novels existed prior to those movies.

But it (Songbirds) was written after the fact...and conveniently after the studio said they wanted spinoffs. Not sure why I called it a novella...I knew it was a full novel I was gonna buy it for the GF but she didn't even know it existed. This stinks of the studio convincing Collins to write another story so they can make a film for it. I can't speak to quality cause I never read any of those books ;^)

I thought FB was a book but I guess it was probably just stuff mentioned in the other books or something cause she has answers when I ask her questions after she drags me to the films. (only FB films...I have seen maybe 3 hours of the main Potter films total including the ending) Honestly I tune the GF out when she talks Potter much like she tunes me out when I discuss my weird nerdy stuff. We both tune out our friends that gush over Marvel Films/TV ;^)

Either way...this is all getting stupid and studios are just watering down their products to the point they have no real value in entertainment anymore. Just because it works sometimes (Marvel) doesn't mean it will always work. (Star Wars, LOTR, Transformers, Aliens) Sooner or later the Law of Diminishing Returns will catch up with you especially since theaters aren't cheap (unless you get a subscription pass) and streaming is becoming more and more popular especially with long form storytelling. Some stories don't need to be told, and better yet some stories no one wants told. I mean what is next an origin film for IG-88? A trilogy of films about Cypher from the Matrix? I mean seriously...

And yeah it was always bad...but this is turning the knob to 11. Bad/mediocre sequels and spinoffs are one thing (Fast and Furious says hello though I find them fun as heck) but this is beyond that now. I mean I figure we are weeks away from a live action Mr. Toad's Wild Ride announcement which is set for a Memorial Day Weekend release to go up against the Chester Cobblepott Goonies Prequel ;^)

This is true. The Global Box Office is where profits are made, for sure.

That said, Transformers proved that even international audiences have their limit for hot garbage.
