How did Carl Weathers never become governor of something?

Of course I'm a fan of the Vikings. A sick and demented Masochist of a fan, but a fan none the less.

It's nearly impossible to believe this movie was made in the US, and in 1955. One of the dozen most sophisticated and difficult movies I've ever seen, but absolutely plain and deadpan. The best way to describe it is a European art film with absolutely no pretense. If 20th Century America, so godawful and corrupt and shallow and gaudy and loud and violent and smug and desperately thirsty, ever reproduced the deep impact of Huckleberry Finn, this was it.
You keep knowing what it is and then it changes, and then again, and then again. But there's no gimmickry, it's completely organic. It all follows so logically. It's like Tolstoy.
I'm going to have to watch it a dozen more times to come close to fully appreciating it, but the other thing about it (and which reminded me of Huck Finn): despite being one of the most intelligent movies I've ever seen, with levels of inaccessibility well beyond anything else Hollywood produced in that or any other period, and I'm sure further levels inaccessible to me, I can't imagine anyone thinking it was in any way snooty or condescending or abstract. It's as direct as the lettering on a sign.
I have no idea this kind of movie could even be made here. So impressive -- it can reach anybody.
I had never even heard of this movie until about five years ago. Now I think it might be the greatest movie ever made.
Also, it flagrantly violates the Child Rule. At least a third of the movie is just two children. And they're amazing, and perfect for it, and better actors -- or at least actors with better parts -- than anybody living.
Picked up Spaceballs, Goodfellas, and My Cousin Vinny in the $5 bin yesterday.

Meh. The only family giggle often during Coming 2 America. It's not high art but after the first 10 minutes (not WW84 bad but close) it actually found it's stride for the remainder and was pretty charming.
