Has anyone else noticed more junk threads popping up? Not sure if that's a result of whatever quick upgrade they did on Saturday.

Is the site acting finnicky for anyone else? The main board page loads fine, but trying to get to any individual thread takes 30+ seconds to load. Happens on both the phone and the desktop.

I’ve had trouble with posts being posted and loading in.

Seems back to normal now. Must've been a temporary hiccup.

We also had to restore our server with stats and the app server as well as the bracket challenge.

So we've migrated the Fan Forum to a new cloud server for now and hope to move from vBulletin to Xenforo in the offseason for much better performance. We were trying to do it now but it was too much to do all at once, so we decided to just get this back up and running.
Nice work, and I can relate to the staggering amount of work this entails (my hospital system had a complete server failure January of 2020, then a damaging malware attack July of 2020 that we're still dealing with).

Question - is there no way to report a post? Sure, spam is annoying but can be ignored. I'm more concerned with trolls coming in here and posting ... less good stuff.

We're still doing a bit of tuning on the database. There has been an intermittent issue there. The new server has MySQL 8 as its database and we're used to older versions. The default is for MySQL 8 to create logs that chew up a bunch of hard drive space and we had to catch that and turn it off.

My employer learned the hard way about the SQL server logging - it killed a few of our apps one day. A few months later, after having disabled the logging, we installed another logging app. ...that wasn’t setup quite right, created a conflict with another server tool, and had more of the same.

even among normal desktop applications, logging seems to be out of control. Teams and Skype ate about 10 GB of logs before I realized what was going on and disabled them. It what universe do I need 10 gigs of logs for anything outside of the LHC?

Excellent LHC reference. If the data taken from ATLAS, just one of the LHC experiments, were stored on standard 4Gb DVDs, the stack would reach the moon - without jewel cases.

Holy ****. I knew GB was off by several orders of magnitude. Didn't realize it was orders of orders of magnitude. It's incredible to me the speed at which it can actually measure and capture that data. A quick search says on the order of 1 PB/s. I honestly don't understand how that would even be possible. You'd need warehouses of RAM just to capture it much less store it.

On a related note, we've been rewatching ST Voyager recently. It occurred to me that if the LHC can generate 1 PB/s of data, even going beyond the limitations of the Heisenberg UP, the amount of data you'd generate trying to detect, store, and transport a person's worth of molecules is absolutely breathtaking. And absolutely hilarious.

If that were the bar against which we’re measured, a great many of us would’ve been banned long ago.
