The reason I thought if him was that I seem to remember a report of the potential.... and the shame that he gambled it away.

The irony of Michigan QB's being so much more successful in the NFL than OSUs. Basic competence for most, and the GOAT. Basic competence is not something that OSU QB's have really been known for. It's funny how one of our best statistical QB's is pretty disliked here, but he also managed to start for quite a few games with some success... (John Navarre)..

I honestly don't know if it's that cruel. What Detroit needs is real leadership- to inspire the players to be better than they are. I know these guys are pros and all, but I still think Meyer can find a way to inspire them to work.

That's Evil Bill's real secret- how to get more out of the players than they think they can. People pretend that it's somehow related to his discipline- but I actually see that part as an agreement between him and the players to understand what it will take to win. If the players don't buy in, discipline on it's own does not work- (see Bill's minions totally failing at trying to copy him). What needs to happen is that the coach and the players agree what sacrifices have to happen to win.

And I honestly see Meyer being able to do that.

Could this trace to an actual difference between systems? Notre Dame's post-Montana reputation was because we ran the flexbone which was not tenable in the NFL (defenders are just too fast) our QBs would struggle in the bigs.

I would argue that New England's success is more from Tom Brady and the veteran group of players that maintain a high standard of play. I would be much more motivated to work hard for a fellow teammate than for the coach. Players put in the work, coaches just add structure.

I am trying to think of a dynasty that turned over their main player(s) and retained the coach to continue their run. There might be one, but I can't think of it.

For the Lions, the failure is the ownership. They say they care about the fans, but as long as the franchise value continues to go up, they don't actually care.
