McSally is already toast, having been appointed after being defeated in the 2018 cycle, plus there's enough material out there of her acting like a b*tchy, unlikable, suburban conservative. Once she votes against witnesses and then to acquit, she's done.

I hope so. Scottsdale, Peoria, and Glendale are hotbeds of social rest, like Orange County in the old days. There's infinite support and money for any (R). I don't know if Tempe, Old Town, and Flagstaff are enough to overcome both that and the seething Arpaio part of the state.

In a midterm where we had a wave. The general is a different deal.

The brown portions of the state are growing, though, so unless the Republicans are able to pass a law counting POC as 3/5ths of a white vote, we comin' rougher every time.

You know I think 2018 was different. Most "wave" mid term elections are because one side sat out while the other side was engaged. Not the case in 2018 where Chump's supporters were fully engaged. Yet they still lost across the country from Pennsylvania to Arizona and everywhere in between with a few notable exceptions (Ohio, Florida) where the fact that his supporters were engaged helped the KKK win those races. If McSally couldn't win in 2018, I'm not sure her prospects are much better in 2020 unless Chump kills it in his re-election (I think Scooby has him winning all 50 states ).

That may be true. I certainly hope so. If both sides put everybody on the field we win in a romp. The right will just run out of Dumpies. There are 60 million, no more, no less. If we get 70 million to the polls they can't even steal it.

But even though 2018 was huge (50%) it was still smaller than 2016 (60%) so that means some Dumpies did stay home* in 2018 when Mango Mussolini wasn't on the ballot. He will be in 2020... they'll be back.

              * Or they're dead. Between their age, their personal habits, their hygiene, and their intellectual aptitudes and the likely of wandering into traffic, that is also possible.

Right, midterm and general differ because of the lack or presence of someone at the top to pull people in; though it does depend on whether that person's presence ultimately helps or hurts. Let's put it this way. On its own, AZ is probably slightly R. A midterm is going to lessen the R turnout moreso than the D turnout, as it always does for the party in the WH, so that gave the Ds the seat in 2018. During the general, there will be a larger turnout, so that would give the slight edge to the default party for the state, in this case R; the question is a) how much will the Rs there be fully motivated by Trump and b) will him present on the ballot turn anyone from R to D?

If we get to 70 million in the polls, Trump will go full "voter fraud" on the bit. He's gonna do that anyway, but just imagine how loud the chorus from the right will be if he truly gets trounced.

Of course he will. He was all set to do that in 2016. The entire plan was to do that and set up his TV network, where he'd be Pat Robertson only Crazier, and fleece the rubes.

This was all just supposed to be a grift. Obviously he's made lemonade with emoluments and straight up bribes since then. So 2020 is win/win: either he can keep the theft going or he can be The Great White Victim in perpetuity.

Except Trump was campaigning as much during the midterms as he is now. He was front and center locking arms with candidates to get them victories. This was not the normal midterm where the President was actually doing work...he was out campaigning to keep the House because a wave against him would be troublesome. (as we have seen)

I doubt it really mattered, though. If you put people on a spectrum by their political engagement, I doubt anybody below the top decile ever pays the slightest attention to who endorses or tours with whom.

Remember, too, how much of a president's job is to work behind the scenes, pulling strings, cutting deals, being politically smart. Now imagine the gaping void at the heart of the GOP. Dump is too ignorant to know that job, too dumb to learn it, too self-absorbed to be convinced it's worthwhile, and too lazy to do the work even if he somehow was persuaded on all three of the above.

That is going to be a huge handicap down ticket. Seriously, how much work do you think Dump actually puts in on political maneuvering -- on anything -- off camera? If he's not tweeting or speaking on camera, he has one thumb in his mouth and his other in his rectum.

                        Periodically, he switches.

Normally I'd agree, but not in the Trump era. Chump's endorsement is everything when it comes to Gooper turnout.

Plus he forces engagement. Problem was the midterms showed he causes engagement from both sides which is why he lost. Hell IIRC there were rumors of candidates not wanting him coming out cause it hurt their numbers.

This midterm probably had the most engagement I have seen in since 2006.

That's the most problematic part of this from a knuckledragger's perspective. With almost full participation on both sides, the GOP lost every statewide office on the ballot in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (as well as smaller places like ME and NV). They split some in IA and AZ but won the gov's races in both. On the flip side they narrowly carried all but one race in Florida and won relatively comfortably in Ohio, proving that Ohio is no longer a top tier swing state. Now of course there's always some nuances in each state that affects those races, but not a great sign.
