ETA: I do agree with you that it probably was a misstep. It didn't help his team at all, and it may have motivated OSU in practice a bit more (may also motivate OSU to run up the score).
You & the others who have commented have this figured out. Definitely a misstep, but a minor factor at most.

The Buckeyes were the more motivated team last night. But the key factor was an intense desire to reverse the result of last year's playoff game.

Like MichVandal said, the Big East didn't care about football and died.

The NCAA decided to expand the BB tourney becoming the bigger tournament over the NIT. They controlled the growth of its basketball tournament and the profits. It did not create the Bowl games so the profits stayed with the creators and the conferences that opted in.

He went from safe to fired following a win in a bowl game. His buyout amount and the staff’s is still enough that I can’t think it was something contractual to wait until the new year. A few boosters must not be happy.

I'm convinced it was Iowa State who got him fired. How can any blue chip program allow themselves to keep their head coach if ISU finishes ahead of them?

So you contend the Bowl games made the power conferences big and not the other way round?

That is interesting and I never thought about it that way.

Texas hasn't been a blue chip program for over a decade though.

Exactly. Since Texas' appearance in the BCS National Championship Game in 2009 (11 seasons), they've finished in the Top 25 only 4 times, and in the Top 10 only once (9th in 2018). Their collective record is 78-60 (an average of a 7-5 or 7-6 season), and their best season was a 10-4 campaign in 2018 (with a Sugar Bowl win against Georgia). That was their only 10-win season in this span. 6 of the seasons they finished with 7 or fewer wins, including 4 losing seasons. 0 National Championships, 0 Playoff Appearances, 0 Conference Championships, 0 Conference Division Championships, and 1 Top 15 season in an 11 season span does not equate to a blue chip program.

                    • OSU reportedly dealing with Covid issues that could leave them without an entire position group.

However, they're still planning to play on the original date of Monday.

Literally no one feels bad for them. Lets hope they have to field 85 walk ons.
