Not surprising. The best D-1 track programs look like the United Nations and I don't think they're here to study engineering.

Every MAC school is going to try to drop to the minimum of 16 programs. Probably almost every G5 program outside of the half dozen with delusions of getting into a Power 5 league.

        "G5"?

Are those the D-1 mid majors?

Yeah, those that aren't Power-5 but still in FBS. AAC, CUSA, Sun Belt, MWC, MAC.

            Group of 5.

In FBS, there are the Power 5 conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC) and the Group of 5 conferences (AAC, CUSA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt).

P5 and G5 names are officially used for the college football playoff tie-ins and the mid-major bid to the New Years Six games.

Power 6 is catching on a little in the basketball world, with the Big East joining the other Power 5 conferences, but it really only has meaning in football. I think P5 may also mean something when it comes to voting at NCAA meetings, but I can’t recall.

Track must be a lot more expensive than I think to run because it always seems to be one of the first ones on the chopping block even though on its face it looks extremely cheap. They're keeping women's track and both men's and women's cross country. All of those teams share the same coaching staff, so theoretically everyone still has a job, though I'm sure some consolidation will happen. Since you still get five scholarships with just a XC team, they're basically just cutting 7.6 scholarships with this move and whatever associated travel costs, but even those seem low. It looks like they take a few long trips each year, but other than that with the number of interdivisional meets and the number of D2 schools in Michigan, everything is within 4-5 hour drive.

Also, looks like I missed a couple earlier, Old Dominion dropped wrestling, Cincy dropped men's soccer and FIU dropped men's indoor track.
It’s not so much that the sport is itself expensive to run, it’s that the expense is scholarship-heavy. It’s otherwise a fairly low maintenance sport. But unless you’re in the Ivy/Patriot class of schools who can recruit on the strength of your academics, getting competitive athletes in the absence of scholarships is untenable.

And even for Directional State U, slicing off just a half dozen scholarships gets you six figure savings per year.

The move today takes CMU down to five men’s sports when the minimum is six, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens. Presumably any waivers would be temporary so unless there is a permanent change they’ll have to make some type of addition in the future.

Apparently Chicago St was set to drop baseball as well, but when realizing they’d be in the same situation they’ve decided to delay the decision.

ECU is the next one. Cutting men’s and women’s swimming and tennis. They’re now down to the D1 minimum.

A couple writers hinting UAH will not be the last. I would assume at least one of the Alaska schools goes.

With their entire state budget in shambles, they’re in a unique situation compared to other schools. I believe one of the solutions to their budget problem is merging campuses/athletic departments. It’s possible both programs fold and a new, third program rises, or since Fairbanks is the flagship their history may be the successor for any combined team in that situation.

But Jim probably has better insight into that.
