    • So I saw Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello tonight.

      Lowe: A+

My god, what a great show. Lovely singer, good patter. He is so likeable and genuine even his songs that I don't really like he sells and makes me want to love them. And he is still just a colossus of talent and style.

      Elvis: F

But that F comes with a caveat, it was the worst mixing board I have ever heard at a concert. It was almost impossible to understand anything Elvis sang or said. But still, I've seen him 3 times in 7 yeas now, and he is losing a step a year. It was depressing to hear him try to compensate for fading range and vocal flexibility by resorting to overamping and heavy guitar distortion. Dude, hang it up, there's no shame. You're 67, you made some of the best music in proto-post-punk, and you got a thirty-year hammock nap while banging your way through every alt-country singer not your wife. It's been a good life; Ross would be proud.

              • Black Midi. I don’t get the hype. Just because you own a few King Crimson and Sweep The Leg Johnny records doesn’t mean you should try and write songs approximating their ideas. Those bands were unique because the players had singular voices on their instruments.

It's a good way to relax and let go of stress and exhaustion.

Also, Hope Sandoval could read the dictionary to me and I'd hang on every word.

Ooh ooh Mista Kottah!! I am here on that date and will need to look into it. I already have tickets to see Duran Duran and separately Bauhaus.

Last night at the request of my 82 year-old father he, my brother, my two sons and I sat down to watch PBS air a 1985 concert by Prince (never before aired) from New York. Prince in his prime and it was awesome for many reasons.

When I worked in the airline industry I knew a guy there who loved Rammstein.

He also like to rifle through abandoned luggage and look for women's panties to handle, so there's that too....

                              • Paula Cole and Sophie B Hawkins will be in Grand Rapids on September 16.

As a child of the 1990s, a queer, and a feminist, I would love to go.

I'm also thinking it would a great 41st birthday gift to myself, seeing as my birthday is September 20.
