Some of you may or may not recall that one of my faves is Scottish folk/jazz/blues what have you guy John Martyn. His album One World was recorded at island Records boss Chriss Blackwell's country estate, on the edge of an old rock quarry that was now a lake. They set Martyn up in one of the guest cabins, ran his guitar out through several different amps, and a multitude of effects pedals, all running abck to the control panel where they could pick and choose which sound they wanted for the final mix.
One song, Small Hours, they mic'd up the surrounding lake, and then blasted Martyn's playing out over a huge PA system, and recorded that. So you hear the lapping waves of the lake, geese flying overhead, and late in the track, the sound of the early morning ciommuter train whooshing by from right to left across the speakers.
A few weeks ago, I came across this Robert Smith cover of that song. It's amazing.

Tickets for Peter Hook and The Light go on sale Friday, performing the Joy Division albums Closer and Unknown Pleasures in their entirety, along with some assorted tracks, and an opening set of New Order songs.
Joy Division never toured the Unites States, because lead singer Ian Curtis hung himself the night before they were set to depart. This is as close as you're gonna ever get to hearing and seeing what would have been.What kind of cheese are you planning to put on top?Comment
