These guys go into my top 100. They tried, as so few do. I don’t think they quite get over the hill* but man they are pushing hard and putting all their mind and balls into it.

Check out what the sax player does now. I have wasted my life.

Edit: Going Down Swinging sustains 4 different time signatures simultaneously and still sounds great. That's Mozart-level composition. I tried tapping this phrase out on my hands and feet and I think I hurt myself.

* They do, on other songs. My god the critic who called them King Crimson meets Mission of Burma had it right. They are so hard. I love this band!

Wow, Steve Sostak really is making a difference. He’s inspiring. The first time I saw STLJ my band opened for them at Fireside Bowl in like 1995, I had long hair past my shoulders and I think Steve thought I was a hippy.
We returned the favor and headlined in Milwaukee at shank hall and they blew us off the stage. Then I missed seeing them for 3 years. 1998 they play the eagles club in Milwaukee, i’m There and i’ve Chopped my hair and sitting there with my jaw on the floor after their performance Steve walks right up to me like it hadn’t been 3 years, recognized me immediately and “hey Dan, good to see you, thanks for coming!” He’s that kinda guy. He’ never forgets your name and always comes over to talk.

Chris Daly their guitar player was incredibly intense on stage. He’d be playing ridiculous time signature and stare at you right in the eyes as if he was looking past the back of your skull until you looked away it felt that uncomfortable. Then he’d jump around or slash his guitar threw the air like a maniac. After the show he was just like Steve, super chill, and personable.

Stocazzo and Tomorrow I Will Run Faster are my favorite albums of theirs but all 4 albums are wonderful.

EDIT: I saw them play at least 10x in Milwaukee and Chicago and each performance was just incredible. The intensity was an 11 each time.

EDIT: what Steve is doing now definitely makes me recall the James Wright poem “Lying In A Hammock At William Duffy’s Farm In Pine Island, Minnesota” the last line which you echoed “ I have wasted my life.”

Put Die Walküre in the books. 4 hours of beautiful music with unfortunately only 1 hour of plot, nearly all which happens in Act I. Then it's 3 hours of Wotan (in my production played by the spitting image of Snake Pliskin, which greatly added to the experience) being browbeaten by his wife and then browbeating his daughter. This is Norse Gods' Days of Our Lives.

During a violent storm Our Hero Siegmund, just routed in battle and on the run, collapses on the steps of a castle with a tree growing through the middle of it, which can't be good for keeping the rain out. Sieglinde, the mistress of the house, says hey my husband's away but why don't you show me your, uh, wounds, and they fall in love at first sight, as one does. Sieglinde's serial killer husband Hunding returns and figures out almost immediately his wife and the Mysterious Stranger are related, with dinner table banter like "hey, the new guy is giving me the same b-tchy side eye as my old lady." Also, funny story, Hunding was one of the party chasing down Siegmund, but a guest is a jewel on the cushion of hospitality so you can stay tonight but I'm going to kill you in the morning Wesley. Honey, don't forget to turn off the torches when you come to bed. 'Night!

There follows some snappy dialog where first Siegmund complains it's bad luck being scheduled for a duel when he just lost his weapon. Funny thing, though, my dad used to tell me someday I'd be in a scrape like this and I'd find a magic sword he left for me. Sieglinde says, huh, my dad used to tell me I'm leaving this magic sword stuck in the tree growing through your house because someday your brother's going to need it.

Oh.

We're twins separated at birth.

(Double take.)

Now let's f-ck.

In the Bayreuth production I saw, the hot (and seriously explicit I mean Germans have no filter) sex was made more interesting by the casting, with the dashing hero Siegmund resembling Viggo Mortensen and his lovely sister Sieglinde resembling Bill Parcells.

Now it's morning. Siegmund pulls his magic sword back out of the tree (subtle, Wagner) and we're ready for the duel.

And that's 99% of the plot. Unfortunately we're only 33% of the way through the opera.

In Act II we discover Fricka, Mrs. Wotan, has been watching all this from Valhalla. She knows the twins are hubby's kids from one of his many affairs. She is, in addition to, you know, his wife, also Goddess of Marriage, so the twins were already hurting her brand just by existing and now them making it is the last straw -- they gotta die.

Wotan and Fricka then argue about this, in song, for two hours. I'm already married, I didn't need this.

Then we finally have the duel everybody's been so worked out about and it lasts ten seconds. Wotan sends Brunnhilde, one of his 10 daughters by a different affair (Remember Erda the spooky Earth Goddess from Das Rheingold? She's the lucky mom!), to fix the duel. First he orders her to make sure Siegmund wins but after Fricka wears him down because if she's not happy nobody's happy amirite he switches up and orders her to fix it for Hunding. Brunnhilde starts to but then sees the twins are really in love and anyway daddy would have wanted it this way so she breaks Hunding's shield. Just then Wotan shows up, sees this, loses his sh-t, breaks Siegmund's (his son remember?) magic sword and allows Hunding to kill him. Not in the best of moods, he then murders Hunding with a mean look (not exaggerating). For her disobedience he sentences Brunnhilde to be left on a rock in a deep sleep wide open for any passing guy. In the end he relents enough to light a ring of fire around her so her rapist will be a brave man. Chivalry is not dead.

Tomorrow (later today actually) I begin Siegfried, which is about the twins' child. He will eventually f-ck up and get all the gods killed in the fourth opera. He spends most of the third one going stabby stabby on anything that moves. Only 9 more hours to go; see you then!

Siegfried.

I was not looking forward to this one because it is wall to wall mahem, and violence in our tv and movies is so boring. But Siegfried is perfectly cromulent. We have only the one new character, the offspring of Sieglinde and Siegmund's coupling in Die Walküre. But we get the band back together from operas 1 and 2 with Mime, Wotan, Alberich, Fafnar, and Erda, as well as Brunhilde in Act III. We also get a bear (briefly) and a magical songbird GPS.

There's lots of skullduggery I won't go into but the upshot is Siegfried is a strapping ute with his mother's looks and his father's brains, neither of which is a recommendation. He spends his days alternately murdering animals or asking them who his real parents are. Mime, the dwarf from Das Rheingold who forged Tarnhelm the magic helmet and the one ring to rule them all, has raised Siegfried after Sieglinde died in labor. Mime's plan is to get Siegfried, grandson of Wotan and a "man with no fear", to fulfill the prophesy and kill Fafner (now a dragon) and recapture the ring to, and he actually says this verbatim, Rule Zee Vorld!

Wotan has a plan, too. He had spun off S&S as his human henchmen to slime out of his deal with the giants. Apparently, humans aren't bound by Divine Contracts Law. Remember, all of this goes back to Wotan stealing the ring Albrich stole from the Rhinemaidens so he could pay off the general contractor who built his castle. The entire Ring Cycle is a shady real estate deal that blew up. With both S&S dead, Wotan thinks their progeny will do the trick, allowing him to ultimately pocket the ring and stave off the death of the gods.

Alberich is also lurking about, thinking that if he warns him about Mime's plot Fafnar might give him the ring back in gratitude. This is ridiculous, even by the convoluted schemes that make up operas, but no time to worry about that because here's Siegfried to slay the dragon. Dying Fafnar, restored to giant form after he loses Tarnhelm to Siegfried, learns his killer's name and warns him to look out for Mime. This doesn't make much impression on Siegfried who I may have mentioned is enthusiastically imbecilic, but when he accidentally tastes dragon blood it allows him to (1) understand bird talk (because... okay?) and (2) hear Mime's thoughts. This Deus ex machina is just in time because Mime is sneaking up behind him. Mime then steals the opera with an outstanding comic soliloquy telling Siegfried everything's fine while telling us in gleeful asides how he's gonna kill big, dumb Siegfried -- asides which of course Siegfried can hear every word of because he has dragon ESP.

We get our chuckles; Mime gets it in the neck.

The songbird then tells Siegfried follow me, I'm gonna fly to where there's a hot sleeping beauty waiting for your wake up kiss or you know whatever. He meets Wotan who gets so disgusted with Siegfried as a representative of humankind he decides f-ck it, let the gods die. An hour of Brunhilde and Siegfried negotiating their first kiss later, curtain.

Siegfried isn't terrible. The music is forgettable -- this is the only Wagnerian opera I will say that about. It's mostly repeating leitmotifs from the prior operas like an over-the-hill band cranking out their old hits on a retirement tour. In fact, the whole opera is an obvious set up for the big Götterdämmerung blow out finale. Wotan actually plugs it, by name, in a speech near the end. Siegfried is a dim-witted and repellent character without even the charm of the villains and rogues of the prior works, so I doubt this is anybody's favorite opera. But it isn't a disaster and it has some bright spots. Call it a 5.
