    • Went a bit old school yesterday listening to the greatest hits from The Spinners. I imagine quite a few people would recognize many of their songs without being able to name the artist.

btw somewhat related (and I'm too lazy to find a different thread) while the show B Positive is not good after giving it a try, the theme song might the most clever sitcom theme song since Cheers.

        Instead of doing coursework.

I think this is a good idea.

              • Picked up "Tonight And The Rest Of My Life" by Nina Gordon. I should also get Veruca Salt... I heard "Eight Arms To Hold You" is decent.

                        • Bands that got better after a departure:

                          -Beatles
-Pink Floyd. This one is hard because they were freaking brilliant with Syd Barrett but it's hard to imagine they could have been any better after Gilmour was added
-Rolling Stones - see above. They were so good with Brian Jones but they had a tremendous output after his passing
                          -Fleetwood Mac
                          -Iron Maiden
-RHCP - another dicey one. I think the loss or Irons was fine, but how good might they have been had Hillel Slovak not died? Still John Frusciante was brilliant
-Nirvana - 4 or 5 drummers before Grohl joined
-Metallica - another dicey one. Absolutely better without Mustaine but who knows how good they could have been with Cliff?
-AC/DC? This is a hard one too

                          Got worse:

                          -Chicago
                          -Genesis
                          -Van Halen
                          -Black Sabbath

Soundgarden certainly got more talented after Hiro Yamamoto left and was eventually replaced by Ben Shepherd (after the failed Jason Everman experiment). Saying they got "better" probably depends on whether one preferred their original, drier/punkier sound in the 80s vs. their hard shift to polished alt metal with Badmotorfinger and then prog pop with Down on the Upside and King Animal.

Chicago post-Terry Kath is virtually unlistenable.

Aerosmith ironically got far worse after the 80s reunion of all the original members. I think the lesson to be learned there is that if you made your best music while high as a kite 24/7, you should really consider another career path after you get sober.

Band you probably don't know of, but one of my favorites, Blue Rodeo, from our neighbors up north.

Bob Wiseman their original keyboard player was a mad genius, but after he left and James Gray joined, they hit a high point creatively as a band. Also went through a couple drummers before they hired Glenn Milchem, and they were at their absolute peak when both he and Gray were in the band together. Sadly, they kicked Gray out of the band, my personal feeling without anything real to back it up, because he wanted a bigger role in the musical direction and arrangement of the songs, and the band is really the two songwriters, and then everyone else. Haven't been as good since.

Sadly, Gray died of a heart attack in 2013 at age 52, brought on probably by untreated diabetes. Met him once in Vermont at a show, wonderful man, brilliant musician. A player's player

Milchem's on guitar here. But this is the sort of thing Gray brought to the band, that musicianship, that ear for arrangements.
