Their cover songs were always awesome. I am biased, as I've loved them since my formative years. Luckily, I did get to see them live (although it was at a music fest, so shortened set of sorts; they *were* the headliners...)
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

They played hundreds of covers in concert; many never made albums. Little by little concert recordings are finding their way to the internet. They are amazing. The early CBGBs shows are hilarious, when they'd do stuff like knock out their entire 20 song set in 25 minutes.

Their initial 5-song (2 encore) set was played in 4 minutes. The albums versions are more than 3 times longer, so play those recordings and imagine them sped up 300%.

The legend went that their first "real" gig lasted 45 minutes. The owner of the establishment was angry and said "Hey, the contract says 60 minutes!" Joey said, "We played 60 minutes...but it only took us 45 minutes to do it."

Love this clip of them arguing a bit between songs. Bad audio, but hey, given the time and place....

"We play music for people without a lot of time." God these guys were pure rock and roll. I love the comment on the 1974 clip. "This is just 5 years after Woodstock." Srsly, imagine the glam going on all around them when they were hatching this. The #1 album on New Years Day 1974 was The F-cking Carpenters.

The British birth of punk was angrily not having a thing to lose. The American birth of punk was joyfully not having a f-ck to give.

I tried counting the strums/minute Johnny would do in a live set. I gave up.
The Musikladen show is a must for any Ramones fan. It really shows how quickly they tightened up their abilities, and their sets. This is just a clip, I recommend dialing up the whole show. I have the DVD and CD of this one. It's awesome.

There's nothing extra in that performance. It's pared down to the absolute bare minimum. Those guys were honest.

It's a reason I love AC/DC. No ballads, just rock. Yeah, that's it. Straightfoward.

Yes, the Ramones definitely subscribed to the thought of:
                Here's a chord.
                Here's a second chord.
                Here's a third chord.
                Now, start a band.

And that guitar is so dirty. This is like southern rock for adults and mental non-deficients.

For thirty years I thought the line in Rip Her to Shreds was "she's so tall." The guitar solo on that second clip could be Tom Verlaine. It's fantastic.

Joey once said that when the first got together they wanted to play Beach Boys covers and **** like that, but they couldn't because they lacked skill. They had to invent a simple style that they could play.

The Ramones also loved 60s melodic music and HATED art rock. They wanted to sandblast all the glam off rock. It was a really different motivation than say The Clash.

Joey Ramone's metaphysical arch-enemy is Greg Lake.

I'd have said Glenn Frey, but he's never been called rock and roll anyway.

Among people with competence the anti-Ramone is probable Bowie, so this is hilarious:

Never knew Bowie to kick a cute guy out of bed.

I have to see Rock and Roll High School again, because Wikipedia claims this is on the soundtrack.
