My former employer won the contract to manage the City of Chicago's conversion to LED street lighting and... yeah... the resistance they received by some groups was weird.

One group especially was hung up on the "blue-light" emitted from the LEDs.

I absolutely favor banning LED billboards on roads. Those f-ckers are so distracting I'm sure they kill hundreds a year.

The light quality from a lot of LEDs is absolute ****. So I get it to some extent.

Relatedly, I'm very much in favor of banning color temps above a certain threshold on any outdoor lights. I despise the 5000k blinders some the people in the area have.

Yes.

There were small groups that complained with the largest being the International Dark Sky group which advocates for less light pollution. The upside to LED is the light is directional. It's aimed downward in a conical shape from the light. This is a big improvement over the old sodium lamps or halogen which scattered light *everywhere*.

The downside, is this directional light can be much, much brighter that traditional street lights.

Upside, the smart system Chicago was using is dimmable. Each light was installed at (iirc) 90% brightness, and is able to be dimmed or brightened for each fixture.

Another camp was the environmentalists, as there are a lot of rare earth chemicals that go into the LEDs and their modems/controllers meaning that if/when the parts break, you have a lot of electronic waste unless the parts can be recycled/repaired.

Third camp was the "blue light is the Devil," tin-foil wearing mouth breathers. Blue light (in close range like your cell phone) can contribute to eye issues some studies are finding, so of course this camp takes it to the extreme where the city is trying to harm everyone.

Fourth, 5G'ers because of the wireless connections each LED light is outfitted with in the city of Chicago. See Camp Three.

And lastly, you have the people who complain just to complain. Yes, there are issues in some neighborhoods because streetlight spacing is far apart and LEDs (with the directional aim) causes dark spots between lights. Other light poles are too close to each other causing entire streets to appear like it's 2pm in July despite it being 2am in November. (Side note, snow is very reflective, and a blanket of fresh snow reflects the new lights very, very well.)

Others who complained have complained because the street lights no longer illuminate the width of the street from front porch to front porch (one solution I heard bandied about sarcastically by city officials reviewing these complaints were "buy a goddammed porch light,"). Or the lights shown into their house now ("Buy some goddammed curtains,").


Also of note: manufacturing quality of these lights varies wildly, with some states joining together to sue some manufacturers because the LED fixtures are failing causing the LEDs to cast purple light instead of white. Wisconsin has the worst problem with this I've seen so far.
