    • Bill Goodman, a better American, and person, than any of us.

In Detroit, renowned civil rights attorney and human rights defender Bill Goodman has died. He was 83. Some of Goodman’s most influential work came during his time as legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights. Under his leadership, the center filed its first habeas litigation on behalf of Guantanamo prisoners, leading to multiple Supreme Court victories. Goodman took on the NYPD’s racist stop-and-frisk policy and led a class-action lawsuit of hundreds of Muslim men who were rounded up and detained after 9/11. Goodman was also celebrated for championing Palestinian rights. After leaving New York, Goodman returned to his hometown of Detroit, where he continued to fight police violence and other social justice issues until his death.

                  Really sorry to hear that.

Our Westy turns 14 in December. Long story short he has diabetes and has lost most hearing and eyesight. He's not in any pain and he's in many ways his normal self, but...

My wife brought him today with her to Thailand to see if their vets can offer us anything better than what we've tried here. Another primary reason is the kids are going to meet us there (flying in from the U.S.) near Christmas because they likely won't have another chance to see him. We don't see him lasting long enough until it's time to return to Minnesota. We went through every possible check to ensure he was ok to travel.

It's an odd existence, but he's in no visible signs of discomfort so for now it's somewhat BAU. I'm very grateful the kids will be able to see him one last time. We have discussed that if he gets much worse during this trip, we will arrange to say goodbye together as a family. I don't look forward to it even though you know it's at some point inevitable.

                  • Thank you everyone. He was in no visible stress but did have kidney disease. We had returned from taking our daughter to a show, and when we got back her grandparents came to take her to dinner as we had somewhere to go. We found him in his favorite spot just after she left. Devastated can’t describe the emotions we felt.

I won't speak ill of the dead, but anyone who pushes for this, well...

I've never met Warren personally, but my mother has at the bridge tables, and my parents were good friends with one of his neighbors, so I have lots of Buffett stories outside of what's reported in the media. A lot of them also involved Bill, but somehow none of them involved Charlie, which also says something.
