            History is chock full of marvelous artists who were awful people, for one reason or another.

            Several years ago, a friend's son was home from college, and we were talking over dinner about his studies. He was a pretty passionate student, had spent some time in Ireland, and was talking about Joyce. I asked if he enjoyed Yeats, and he shrugged him off, saying his politics were ugly. Seemed to me like a terrible waste to dismiss that kind of talent so quickly for reasons unrelated to his craft. But, if Hitler's artwork had been divine, would I be able to enjoy it? I don't know.

                              Another example. I'm watching the docu-drama on Clinton's impeachment on Hulu. Apparently, none other than Lewinsky herself helped produce it. And as I watch through it, I'm struck by how complex a person Bill Clinton was.

                              Pioneer for women's rights. The best retail politician in decades. A talented negotiator. A rapist and sexual predator.

                              He was all of those things.
