I think calling cross-checking would really open up the game. It's crazy how much of that crap they allow.

I have no idea why Wilson gets away with what he does. He should have had long (season-length) suspensions long ago, and he should be on notice for banhammer. He's crap and he's a lethal threat.

The PA are the guys who should be after these guys the most.

Weren't they supposed to do this when they started calling all the Ulf Sammuelson Impeding / Headhunting stuff like ten years ago?

I thought the whole idea was a league where Sidney could roam free without having to worry about the Bertuzzi / McSorley psychopaths.

They basically allow defensemen to cross check people in the back in front of the net. It happens all the time.

You are supposed to be allowed to clear guys out by pushing, jostling, etc.

Maybe the solution is to have zero tolerance on cross checking AND to force forwards to remain in motion when crossing in front of the net? You can't just camp out there, I get that. x seconds in the paint, that sort of thing?

Well, then crosschecking isn't crosschecking. But, maybe a 3 second rule and paint like basketball is the answer.

                • 1. The amount of cross-checking that's allowed is beyond absurd. And I don't mean love taps but full on mauling.
                  2. The players brought this on themselves by agreeing to a max penalty of $5000
                  3. I'll never be a huge defender of "the code" but even still the problem is the NHL seems to take a harsher stance on players that would look to pay Wilson back than Wilson himself

I am all for enforcing the rules.

Don't get me wrong, I hate Don Cherry Hockey. But if the refs won't do anything better one guilty guy paralyzed than a dozen innocent ones.

That's how I learned how to play D, too. Which also frees up the stick to stick check the player, too.

                      • Wilson didn’t get suspended for the same reason refs don’t call cross-checking: It’s entertainment.

Now, everyone talking about the NHL, people will tune in to see someone bash Wilson’s face in, and the NHL makes money.

Of course, they’d make more money by actually allowing skilled players to use their skills without fear of getting decapitated by goons like Wilson but, what do you expect from a league whose Department of Player Safety is run by George “Violent Gentleman clothing line” Parros and overseen by VP Colin “how am I still employed” Campbell?

Edit: Also should mention, the dinosaurs at the league office love the bloody, gruesome injuries. Reinforces the image of hockey being a “tough man’s game” to them.

                        • If we're gonna b*tch about Tom Wilson trying to slam an opponent head first into the ice, can we also b*tch about this?

                            Is this still true?

Because everything else the league does smells like Harvard MBAs figuring out how to charge the same for one fewer McNugget.

Colin Campbell is still the Director of Hockey Operations (which oversees the Department of Player Safety). If what I said wasn’t true, Colin Campbell wouldn’t be the Director of Hockey Operations.
