*edit* The Yotes hosts are waiting for the video of Gutierrez speaking, but... apparently it happened? One hand doesnt know what the other is doing (typical Yotes).

      • I'm honestly shocked that the people of Tempe didn't want to commit to an arena project to an ownership group that stiffed their previous home.

The National Hockey League is terribly dissapointed by the results of the public referenda regarding the Coyotes' arena project in Tempe. We are going to review with the Coyotes what the options might be going forward.

          • The lack of "We remain committed to hockey in the desert," from all the statements tonight is very telling.

Obviously everyone is keeping their cards close to their chest, but that's the direction the wind is blowing. Just not sure on the landing spot.

One thing the two Yotes hosts kept reiterating was the lack of an alternate plan announcement. Surely the organization that signs their paychecks couldn't have put all their eggs in one basket. There has to be an alternative, right?

Seeing them slowly come to the realization that umpteen ownership groups struggling for at least 15 years (there was a point at the beginning where things seemed okay) only to have their current ownership group that fell out of favor in Glendale continue that trend and have salted the entire meteo region from ever growing their team has been.... interesting to see them work through.

                  • I do feel bad for what fans they have but JFC this thing has been going on for a solid decade and a half.

Rip the bandage off, pick either Houston or Kansas City (they’re not going to Quebec or anywhere East because nobody is moving out of the Eastern Conference) and end this nightmare.

Reading up on some of election campaigns and it just goes to show how incredibly stupid the Yotes management was on this whole thing. They spent $250k on the Yes campaign. Meanwhile the No campaign spent millions. Why? Because the labor unions funded the No campaign heavily. Why? Because the Coyotes wouldn’t commit to using unionized labor on the construction of the new arena.

I lose the NHL at my soon to be new home, and I am so proud of the people for being atypically rational.

Tuesday's unofficial tally shows similar trends among the three ballot items ― Propositions 301, 302 and 303 — all of which needed to receive a majority of "yes" votes in order for the Coyotes project to move forward. Each one was losing by a 56% to 44% margin, with the exception of Prop. 303, which was losing 57% to 43%.

Houston has been banded about for years and has an arena so it’s the logical landing point though KC has an arena as well. The NHL was apparently in discussions with Salt Lake City about “expansion” months ago too, though I have no idea where they’d play. The E Center or whatever it’s called now is too small and too far away while the Jazz arena won’t fit a rink and doesn’t have an ice plant AFAIK.

                            • A few people on Reddit are commenting about a backup plan to build on a reservation. I can’t find anything on that and the overly negative reaction from all parties seem to indicate if there was a plan, it was Plan B lightly scribbled in pencil in the corner of a scrap paper to the Tempe’s Plan A in bolded size 70 font.

I don’t see how they don’t end up in Houston. Hockey didn’t work in Atlanta in the #6 market, but it’s hard to pass up #7 when the alternatives are #29 and #33.

Only because the ownership group there couldn't decide where to eat lunch together at, let alone make any decisions regarding the franchise and its players.

It wasnt like they were pulling (non-ASU) Coyote attendance numbers. I think (without digging in the history books) they had attendance on par or better than Florida and Tampa Bay at the time. The Thrashers weren't propped up for a decade and been told by the community for years they weren't wanted.

The Thrashers owners decided to just bail instead of figure their sh*t out and sold to the Manitoba Moose owners.

*edit* Pretty sure the ownership group was only interested in basketball and the arena rights.

*edit 2* Here's a really good write up:
                                https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comm...eal_chance_to/

I will ammend my comments to say, yes, attendance wasn't good, but that wasn't the reason it failed. I completely forgot that AOL-TimeWarner got the team early from buying out all of Ted Turner's property and they were very disinterested in owning the team. I knew ASG was a bunch of mistakes in a board room.
