Handy, I know it's easy to toss out the race card, but the D is presently dominated by NY and CA folks (see: AOC, Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff, Swalwell, et al). And those folks are far more liberal than Dixie-crats. Liberalization of the D is a real factor. But I'll give you credit by saying not the only factor.

In the end however, folks vote wallet even over (their most despicable) biases.

Don't believe me? Previously lily-white Kentucky basketball went integrated when they realized they could reach more fans (aka money).

Dixie-crats are fiscal pragmatists and don't see NY/CA liberalism in their fiscal favor.

I’m sure you’re also aware, and willing to acknowledge, that while the Democratic Party has moved left in the last decade or two, it’s still considered a mainstream left-of-center party when compared to other countries’ parties. The GOP, on the other hand, has moved so far right that it’s basically off the charts. I think only one or two European parties are further right. I think someone posted a graph of this movement on here not too long ago. Dixiecrats, who haven’t existed in any real numbers since maybe the 1970s, didn’t give two ****s whether their colleagues fighting for civil rights were from California, New York, Minnesota, or Mars. Their utter raison d’etre was continued subjugation of minorities- specifically black people- which puts them squarely in a party like AfD, or the modern day GOP.

I never could figure LBJ out. By all rights the dude should have been another Strom Thurmond or at best a Robert Byrd. But he was, apparently, the real deal. Actually committed to something like racial justice, or as close as you were gonna get in 1964 anyway. How did that happen? Was he just 6 sigma off the mean?

LBJ wanted one thing, and one thing only: to become President. He was willing to do anything to get there, including saddling up next to the leader of the Dixiecrats: Richard Russell. When that got him where he wanted (Senate Leader), he had to appeal to the “coastal elites” that Sic spoke of, which included Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and Paul Douglass of Illinois, those beautiful coastal states, so as to build their support for a future run for President. Nixon as VP under Eisenhower was very civil rights-minded, so it kind of started there, or at least snowballed, and Kennedy- politically convenient or not- continued the snowball after Eisenhower. LBJ basically finished the job. It helped he knew the inner workings of the Senate- kind of like Biden does now. Let’s hope that’s a positive sign for us Democrats now.
If it wasn’t for Vietnam (a huge if), LBJ would be a top 5 President, at least in my opinion.

Sinema is on board with advancing the reconciliation bill. She’s just not on board with the price tag. I was mad at her last night. I’m not as mad today. I still think she sucks, but if the bipartisan bill, along with the reconciliation bill a price tag of, say, even $2.5 to $3 trillion, are signed into law, it’ll still be the most significant investment in physical and human infrastructure since LBJ’s administration.

Im still mad at her...going public with that was her playing chicken with the House Dems and gave the opposition more leverage. I guarantee she sucks at poker and chess...
