As of now it means nothing, but if things dont work out how the GOP plans (i.e. Trump's influence gets them the House) in 2022 we will look back at this as a harbinger.
But...I thought he was going to be back as President in a few weeks.

I am sure the date moved again ;^) It is like any weather related prediction there is a degree of uncertainty :^P

In other news...this one is for all of us that don't like Pelosi but find ourselves loving her these days: https://***********/frankthorp/statu...84238399012879

PELOSI on the backlash to mask mandates: "That's the purview of the Capitol physician...nothing to say except we honor it."
Q: @GOPLeader McCarthy says it's against the science.
        PELOSI: "He's such a moron."

        • This is why Pelosi has never been the hero many of you make her out to be.

She is basically saying "why should people pay taxes for things that don't directly benefit themselves. "

          https://***********/mstratford/statu...431215621?s=19

Just a massive swing and a miss.

Her conclusion that it shouldn't be forgiven is the correct one, but her argument was poorly stated.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Nobody has ever called her a hero.

We applaud that she makes fools of the GOP consistently.

I disagree that it was a correct conclusion, but how can anyone claim she is a socialist if she doesn't believe education should be free for everyone.

I don't understand why every American high school graduate looking to go to a university doesn't go to Europe, where it's free in a majority of countries.

                  No. Yes.

Just means test loan forgiveness. If mommy and daddy have enough money to pay your loans then make them pay them. If not, then we'll pay them.

I have zero sympathy for people with rich parents who grouse about their loans. **** you.

You should listen to Chapo Trap House rip Nancy and Liz. They aren't socialists, they just aren't fascists and that's why the Right get heartburn about them.

                    • College tuition is too expensive. I don't think of anyone outside of college administrators disputes that.

Loan forgiveness doesn't address that problem. In fact, it will probably exacerbate it, if anything. It won't change the cost of college. How likely do you think it'll be that anyone who takes out a loan starting the day after forgiveness will ever pay back a nickel?

Make college free, then come to talk to me about forgiving the loans of those who have already had to pay the overpriced tuition.

I'd add something in there about graduating or at least leaving in good standing to have them forgiven. If some frat boy type who basically went to college to party flunks out or gets kicked out due to behavior or something, I don't want their loans forgiven. There could be a few rare cases where someone legit put forth the effort and still flunked out. I would be ok with some level of forgiveness there too I think. But would need to be case-by-case basis.

Don't try to measure effort, don't make it some Puritan normative bullsh-t. You get your chance and if you're poor we pay for it. If you blow it you played yourself.

It's like the morons who think we should forgive loans for STEM degrees but not English. Again: **** you. If anything, the higher career earnings you can expect the less we should pay your loans back.

Not for Americans, it's not. My wife went to Oxford for grad school, and her tuition was >10x of what UK citizens paid. During the time we lived there, there was a student uprising in London because they were raising tuition in UK public colleges to something like $3000 per year.

If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

Which is why I said "a majority of countries."

Personal experience shows that a university degree from an accredited school in Western mainland Europe costs $250 a semester, including books. Lodging and food is of course extra, but there is also the opportunity to work as a student.

College is not free for American students in a majority of European countries, no matter how you define European.

Edit: here's a link that purports to list 10 European countries with free or low tuition: 10 European countries with free or virtually free college tuition (edmit.me)

"Germany is a popular destination for American students as it is one of the few countries that offer free college tuition to all students enrolled in state higher education institutions regardless of nationality."

Cheaper than US colleges? Sure. But what isn't?
