I can’t remember if they added it in 2014 or 2018, but Senegal got knocked out on fair play in Russia. Which really makes the first game important because it seems like that is either when teams are most agressive or referees are most likely to hand them out. For the most part the first matches have had more yellows.

What’ll be fun to watch is Mexico learning absolutely nothing from this and continuing their downfall. They’ll blame it all on Martino, hire some Liga MX retread, and continue to decline.

So, why did Mexico and Canada fail?

Canada due to inexperience and hubris. You can’t play a CONCACAF game at the World Cup and expect to succeed. Bruce Arena said one thing best: “qualifying is for the vets, the World Cup is for the kids.” Starting a 39 year old midfielder isn’t the best idea.

Mexico failed due to a number of factors but the biggest being thinking they’re still full of world class talent while really being full of old, lazy players from a sharply declining domestic league. But that’s what happens when you’re federation cares more about money than winning.

I’d say Mexico will fix things after this but they won’t and they’ll ride the El Tricycle again:

1. Come out guns blazing in a post World Cup year, beating up on minnows and meaningless friendlies. Maybe they win the Gold Cup or Nations League (though I have doubts about that). Everyone picks them as a darkhorse World Cup favorite.

2. Teams with better talent and/or coaching figure them out and expose them, Mexico’s form dips.

3. Scramble and figure s- out enough to get to the World Cup.

4. Post a respectable result at the World Cup.

5. Repeat.
