How is Donovan a diva here?

      • Oh, for the added context, San Diego just had racial incident last week.

Give the ref latitude to red flag some punk as-swipe who is doing this to get guys off their game: that's clearly unsportsmanlike and could lead to reprisal on the pitch. But have the League review have teeth and fine the player and his club* as well as suspending him.

          * Even though with The Model that's stupid because the cartel is just fining itself.

            • Sorry but the player that got the red should have still received the red - if they in fact "believed" his reason for the retaliation then the Phoenix player should have been ejected if that is within the rules. I don't care the reason for it you can't say it's ok to retaliate no matter the reason. And by not sending the Phoenix player it gives a mixed message as well.

"We believe you enough to put you back into the game, but not enough to punish the offender".

The LOTG simply state a player is sent off for “using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures”. What is OFFINABUS is a very subjective thing and ever changing. To say “any homophobic slur must treated as OFFINABUS” isn’t unreasonable.

I think the officiating crew handled things fairly well here. The referee saw the retaliation, sent off the player, but listened to the players about the circumstances and rescinded the card. Now, if the referee had actually heard what was said and understood it’s context I’m certain the Phoenix player would’ve been sent off. The problem lies in if nobody on the referee crew heard what was said then nothing can be done beyond noting these facts in a post game report (which would need to done anyway considering a send off was rescinded). I also think they handled the post situation well, San Diego is well within their rights as far as I’m concerned to demand the player be removed by the team, and Phoenix has the right not to. They seemed to work as well as they could to mediate a solution so the game could be finished but Phoenix didn’t want to help. It was a s- situation to be placed in as a referee and they came out of it not being the story when they easily could have.
Ok. So basically it comes down to the porn situation: You know it when you see it.

I agree that this crew did about as good as they could with their explanations and how they handled things. This was a no-win for them.

Are referees at the pro level expected to be at least somewhat multi-lingual? Or do they at least get the "7 Dirty Words" briefing for different languages?

I've been in situations with baseball where Spanish was the preferred language on the field over English, but I was able to use my limited year of Spanish from high school to get by. I'm sure Spanish is the most common language here in North America after English, but I'm sure you don't have to look very far to find other languages....

To be honest it may not even be his fault. I'm just so tired of the guy. He's ARod without looks. No, John Terry was ARod without looks. He's Jeter without looks. Undeniably a great, but, guh.

It’s not a written requirement AFAIK but it’s definitely a “if you expect to advance you’d better know ‘chinga tu madre’ means” thing.

Even at my level, a Regional Referee, there is an expectation you know some Spanish phrases and their context, it’s just the nature of soccer in this country.

Dempsey was the hard working d-ck.
                        LD was the talented p-y.
                        Arena is just an a-hole.

Dempsey v Donovan is a debate that will go on forever. They were both great just in two very different ways.

                            • There's about one month to go in the MLS season and the two best teams in points per game are Toronto and Seattle.

(Seattle is also behind Philly and Columbus in the Shield standings by one point but Seattle has also played one less game)

                              • On a different note, in England:
                                https://mobile.twitter.com/henrywint...10450406219777

Unfortunately, the obsession with lower leagues is exactly why English soccer is a financial mess outside the Top 6.

Italy, Germany, Spain, France, and Portugal all allow reserve teams of first tier clubs in their respective third tier. Of those countries only Germany has a national third tier, and the 3.Liga was only formed in 2008.
