France’s Ligue 1 attempting to entice American broadcasters with matches played in the US.

So first off, it’s apparently not league matches. It’s supposedly some sort of cup competition.

Here’s the big thing and the dirty secret that sports media in this country really tries to hide:

European soccer isn’t really popular in this country. Some European soccer teams are popular in this country and the ratings reflect that. Juventus and Milan get decent ratings, the rest of Serie A does not. Barcelona and Real Madrid get good ratings, the rest of La Liga does terribly. Bundesliga? Does terribly if it’s not Bayern or Dortmund. Even the Premier League has a drastic difference in ratings between matches that feature Liverpool, City, and Man Utd versus matches that don’t. The Champions League does well because those matches will almost always have one of the above teams.

The Premier League has somewhat been able to get past this because a) sheer financial power (lower PL are regularly outspending even top European teams) b) it’s in English and c) Comcast throwing nearly everything they have behind them.

The reality of things is that the most popular league in this country is Liga MX, it’s just that 99% of its audience speaks Spanish so, according to the media, it doesn’t count. The Premier League is a good second, the above teams are probably third and MLS is fourth. And the gap between 3 and 4 is a lot smaller than one would think.
