        • Sweden runs it up on Italy 5-0, including three goals off corners. Sweden advances and has a great bounce back after nearly being upset against South Africa.

France and Brazil had a great game. French won 2-1 with a goal in the 80th to go ahead after Brazil had tied it up earlier in the half. It's also given the French a little breathing room, though they'll still likely need points against Panama to advance.

          • Jamaica gets by Panama 1-0 and will have their star back for the finale against Brazil. Just need a draw to advance.

I wanted to do another top 16 power rankings, but last time I based it on teams that were in the top two of the standings. That would cause a couple funky results like Brazil not being ranked but Jamaica being put in there, plus Groups A and B haven't really shown much promise thus far, so here's a top ten.

            1. Germany
            2. Spain
            3. Japan
            4. Sweden
            5. France
            6. USA
            7. Netherlands
            8. Brazil
            9. England
            10. Denmark

            • So much for Germany at #1... Group H is turned all kinds of upside down. Colombia takes down Germany 2-1 with a header off a corner in 90+6, after Germany had tied it with a penalty in the 89th. First group stage loss since 1995. And Colombia has locked up a knock-out round berth after Morocco upsets South Korea and hands them another disappointing result. South Korea is all but eliminated due to goal differential.

Group A is now done, and one co-host is now eliminated. Switzerland wins the group with another 0-0 draw against New Zealand. Norway blew out the Philippines 6-0 and ended tied at four points with New Zealand and advance on goal differential.

Aussies need a win tomorrow or both hosts will be out.

              • A couple of 4-0 blowouts in what were supposed to be the most competitive matches in each group as the Aussies knock out Canada and Japan thrashes Spain.

Canada goes from Olympic gold to out in the group stage.

                • I see the US has completely forgotten how to play soccer. They advance, but pretty sure they are going out in round of 16 at this rate.

Player of the match is Right Goalpost. Single handedly kept the World Cup dream alive.

Advanced, but now likely have to play Sweden which is probably the team I would’ve liked to see them avoid for as long as possible.

                    • And the capper is that Lavelle is out next match for getting two yellows. I wouldn’t call them weak yellows, but rather inconsistent. Neither of the ones she’s received seemed any worse than what the referees were just giving fouls to other players.

Don’t worry, they’ll do what they always do: Blame the coach, fire him, say “oh if only (insert injured player) was available”, change nothing and move on. The USWNT can never fail, they can only be failed.

Given they essentially haven't failed in the last oh decade. I'm not sure where your sarcasm is coming from.

Unless this is about the Olympics.

Especially compared to how the USMNT apparently always makes the right moves.

Despite all the infighting over the years, this is still a program that has never finished below third in either major tournament. That may very well change this year, especially with a likely Sweden match-up, but to act like the women have been the problem program when the men’s team just had a dad cause the coach to leave for a year is something.

Nobody had even mentioned the men's program in this context until you, let alone said the men don't have their own issues.
Why you feel the need to compare to and then trash the USMNT in order to feel better about the USWNT is bizarre.

It’s a historical reaction. Whenever they’re eliminated from a major tournament, World Cup or Olympics, the blame always goes to the coach and never to the players. April Heinrichs’ tenure is a really good example of this. She took over in 2000 after the USWNT won the Olympics in 96 and the World Cup in 99, the USWNT then lost the 2000 Olympics final in OT and lost in the semifinals of the 2003 World Cup to a golden generation Germany. Did anyone blame the players that were probably too entrenched and holding back talented younger players? Nope, it was all April’s fault.

Greg Ryan got similarly tossed out in 2007 after losing one game in his tenure. That one game was a World Cup semifinal to Brazil. Again, coaches fault, no one else (although that one is probably correct).

Sundhage left in 2012 after all the criticism of the loss in 2011.

Jill Ellis is still criticized despite winning twice!

I’ve said it before: Manager of the USWNT is the worst job in all of world soccer. You have to win, no exceptions. Anything less and it’ll be your fault.
