  • 2009 Confederations cup is a long time ago. I need a new memory! I don't count Algeria. Dramatic but shouldn't have been needed.

In this case the offside call is correct because the Ecuador player was in the line of sight of the GK on the initial shot before the deflection. Stuff like this is kind of a judgement call (“interfering with an opponent”) but when the player is in front of the GK it’s pretty easy.

Landon Donovan’s goal against Brazil in the final is peak USMNT.

Watching the games, I’d rather play the Dutch over Ecuador.

Interesting. So if the player was in an onside (but still in line of sight) position at the initial shot, the keeper starts going to the right, then the player moves into the offside (but no longer in line of sight) position at the time of deflection, still offside?

Also, as an aside, if there was any concerns that the refs were paid off by Qatar, that call should dispel such concerns. Qatar needs Ecuador to win this match to have any hope at advancement.

                • One of the group tie breakers: Disciplinary points ('Fair Play'): As per a FIFA formula based on yellow and red cards. The team that has accumulated the fewest of these over the course of the group stage comes out ahead if this tiebreaker is used.
                  1 Yellow card
3 Second yellow card/Indirect red card
                  4 Straight red card
5 Yellow card and straight red card

In that case it wouldn’t be offside because he’s not in an offside position when interfering with the GK’s line of sight.

                    Offside is really tricky.

I'm probably going to have to switch over to the UK ITV broadcast at halftime, which I am sure will be 100% impartial.
